R-D1s: should I or shouldn't I....?

I did it!

Welcome to the club! I am very interested to see how you like the R-D1 after using the M8. I have a friend who owned both, and actually sold the M8 because he preferred the R-D1 so much.

I own a fancy new Canon 40D. After I got a second hand R-d1s (1000 euros) the 40D is collecting dust on a shelf.

I LOVE the R-D1s. You feel like making photos, not like controlling a computer. And IQ is great.

1000eur? hmmm thats quite a bargain. Where did you get it? eBay?

Thanks for the welcome. I do love the M8 and there is no way I would get rid of it. However, I find myself sometimes missing the feeling of shooting with a film camera, and the Epson gives me back a lot of that feeling. Especially if I hide the display and just pretend I'm shooting film. Although I have only had the camera for about half a day at this point, I can already tell that I am going to enjoy using it, and it will be the perfect compliment to my M8. (And I think it's also going to cure my lust for an M6, at least for the time being.)

Well, I think it's the usual price for used R-d1's.

I found it in a classified in a newspaper. I was lucky, as the owner lived in the same city I was permitted to try the camera as much as I wanted.

Thanks to everyone for all the encouragement - the R-D1s arrived in amazingly short time from RobertWhite in the UK, and unfortunately coincided with a crazily tight deadline at work - so I took my first walk with the camera today.

The Inevitable First Impressions Thread will follow! But for now here's a quick output (straight from Lightroom > Photoshop > web with no adjustments) of one shot from today's walk.

Thanks again to all!

After reading this thread, I too have succumbed to buying one. With the strong AUD (against the USD), I just can't resist.

I have moved from being a full-on Canon DSLR user to owning a couple of M bodies. I am hoping that the R-D1s will give me the best of both worlds - the simplicity and compactness of the M bodies/lenses, and the convenience of digital. I get my film developed and scan the negs before doing anything with the pictures anyway.

If things work out, my last DSLR (5D) and my 2 remaining L lenses will see the light of fleaBay. I will also sell all of my film M bodies and keeping only one.

Wish me luck!!! I'm excited!!!

Interested where you are all getting your RD1 from. just done a search on the web and apart from a couple on ebay (new) I can't find any in the UK.

I bought one on EBay about 3 weeks ago. The seller sent me many long missives on his tips for the camera. I got lucky. Paid $1650 got 3 extra batteries with it.

Courage perhaps, but if your like me and have but one digi camera - 20D with a couple lenses - then you're not losing much and it'd be easy to jump back in.

And given the recent M8 plot line, I'm again interested in the Epson.

That's exactly my thoughts... the worst thing that could happen is that the R-D1 is not for me and I can sell it to recoup some $$$. I can always go back to the good old 40D/5D path, or (how dare I) consider a D300 :)

I guess one could replace "courage" with "foolish", but that's a gamble I'm willing to take. To me, an R-D1s is not that more of an orphan than an M8 considering Leica's shaky future ahead of them :)
