R.I.P Nikon D40!

Just started reading my new copy of AP, and am informed that Nikon has finally ceased production of the D40 dslr. I am a big fan of this little camera, since buying one a few months ago, to use with my venerable Nikkors ( both AI and pre. AI ), it's small, light, and compact, and to my way of thinking - a good lower priced alternative to a 4/3 camera, for those wishing to use old lenses. Using a separate meter ( or guesstimation ) and manual focus, does not bother me much, as I've done it for years with my 'golden oldies', the fact that it is 'only' 6mp. on an APS C sensor, does in my opinion contribute to the quite reasonable high ISO performance obtainable. Prices for this camera are allready very low indeed, at least here in the UK, and I think they may drop even more now, I like it that much, I may get another to be permanantly attached to my 105mm f2.5!. 🙂

normally I could care less about nikon's lower end but I am with you here, I think the d40 and then the d40x which I have used quite a bit were great cameras with a neat character. Of course after a while of using them I got infuriated with their limitations but I do like that nikon digital image fingerprint which is a lot more "thick" then canon's when printed on good paper. I shot a lot of pictures with a d40x and a zeiss 85 1.4 and was surprised how well everything looked from such a cheap camera.

I would not complain to see the sensor of the d40 or d40x reused in a compact camera, like say a nikon p6000 type, love that body, very comfortable, hate that lens and sensor...

It's a shame. The D40 is probably my favorite DSLR of Nikon, but I only own a D40 and D80. The fact that I can carry it around all day without it seriously weighing me down is a selling point, plus the images are superb from such a low-end body.
I'm with you Dave, the non-focusing or metering of some lenses doesn't bother me, so I'm very fond of the D40.

Bought the 35mm 1.8G for mine and I'm hoping for great things from it. I use it far more than the D3OO which I should really sell as it always seems to big to take out.

I've been thinking about getting one for a long time due to it being just so compact. May have to bite the bullet.

I like mine. Favorite lens on it is is the 105/2.5 PC. Will be getting a 35/1.8 when they become available, and possibly a 10-20 Sigma sometime. The D60 still covers the d40 ground by allowing many non-AI lenses to work (though non-metered).

If there's any justice, the D40 will be remembered as one of Nikon's very best cameras; I hope mine lasts forever. A plastic wonder of the highest order and even now more camera than most people will ever need (and I say that as somebody who is actively using seven different cameras right now). Until there is something like D700 capability in a small, light body, I won't be buying another DSLR.

ive been wanting to purchase one of these babies.. but unfortunately, my salary wont let me get it.. i guess those are the misfortunes of being a 23 year old fresh grad.. but, my birthday is coming.. hoping to find of those in one of the camera stores here.. i hope ill be able to buy the last piece here in the philippines.. ^_^
