R.I.P. Sebastiao Salgado

He did not die young but as often happens with a man who loomed so large, his death has been a shock to so many. Lucky that we have had in the world such a man and such a photographer.

Something along the lines in here? I know little of the man, just some of his pictures

NYT on Salagado

My main concern was that he had become what he so greatly campaigned against in his early career. He was funded by Vale, a resources company that has a poor environmental record to produce exploitative work in the Amazon. His response was basically “it is what it is, and rewilding my farm is expensive”. He didn’t owe me anything personally, at all, but his general lack of willingness to engage about it disturbed me.

If you are interested in these issues, as part of informing yourself, you should read "When We Sold God’s Eye" by Alex Cuadros.

Thanks Marty - understood and I agree.

I’ll order the book too - I have a goodly pile of reading!
