Hi folks,

I have been preparing a nice trip: landing in Atlanta, rent a Ford E-350 Passenger van with a V8 engine and roll down to the coast of North West Florida.
I will travel in Alabama, Georgia and NW Florida.
I'm going to fire the shutter of a couple Leicas or Nikon F like crazy.
I was wondering if there are some nice used gear shops that I could visit on the way and take the opportunity to grab a few pieces of gear. Are there any good places for that ?
Thanks

Don't know about gear shops, but I can recommend two places to visit if you haven't already planned your itinerary....

One would be Providence Canyon, near Columbus GA. Largest canyon east of the Grand Canyon. Very neat: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Providence_Canyon_State_Park

Second would be the Barber Museum near Birmingham AL. If you're into motorcycles and vintage race cars, this place is a definite destination.

If you're in Birmingham and you want to try probably the best Barbeque around, Dreamland would be the place.

Savannah definitely has its charms -- a bit touristy, however, but it's generally tolerable. I lived there for two years -- it's a great place to visit, no question. If you're into nautical things, the Ships of the Sea Museum on MLK Blvd is not to be missed. Jekyll Island was my personal fave when I lived Savannah, so I can't help but recommend a visit there!

Al, have you explored Providence Canyon? How far is it from Columbus?

Whoa! You are in luck...;)

Lived in this area all my life. There are a few RFF members around here as well. As far as shooting, there is a wealth of resources!

For a used shop, there are basically, three:

KEH which you pretty much order ahead of time, not sure if you can pick it up at their place anymore.

Wing's Camera...great place, family owned and keeps the local schools and film enthusiasts happy with Nikon/Canon/other SLR equipment. They have a little Leica gear from time to time as well as MF.

Quality Camera is where I bought my Summarit. They also have a bit of Leica gear from time to time along with film gear of other brands.

Give us a little information about yourself, where you are from and when you will be here. We just might be able to meet up with you! Another mini-RFF meet!!:)

I recently relocated to GA, and want to get over to Savannah when time permits.

Well, coordinate your calendar! We have a tour set up through Savannah once again as part of The Deep South project that will include Charleston. Tried to schedule it for this Spring, but life got in the way....thinking July now.

I am amazed that so few RFF members have been to Savannah, let alone set up a meet there. It is amazing and could keep a photographer busy for life.;)

Hi David,

I will land on 8 July at Atlanta and I have made some reservation for a house in Navarre Beach from 12 to 20 July. I will fly back form Atlanta on the 26th.
I think Savanna is going to be too much of a trip for us since we have a 2 year baby girl.
I would like to take a Huey flight with the Sky Soldiers near Atlanta.
I will take a look at the shops you are indicatiing.
Cheers
