I looked all over and I can't seem to find the answer. Would a collapsible Industar I-50 collapse into an R3a? Not having to dish out for a 40/1.4 might help me rationalize an R3a.
Nope, it does not (at least as far as I can tell from my Bessa R and L), don't even try it, you'll scratch the insides of the camera (ask my why I know that...)
You might try putting something like a broad rubberband, an O-ring or something like that onto the lens barrel, so that it won't collapse completetly!
I do not know the specifics of the lens in question but I remember back when the Leica CL came out, Leica warned about certain lenses interferring with the meter arm. Their solution for collapsable lenses was to use Dynmo (sp?) plastic label tape and tape around the barrel, just below the lens front. The band of label tape looked good (especially if the matte balck version was used. The tape was thick enough that a ring of it prevented fully collapsing the lens, allowing it's safer use.
