I am getting a mixed web answer to whether it is safe to collapse the Summitar 50/f2 lens on the Canon P Rangefinder. I wonder if anyone here can point me in the direction of a definitive answer to this question. I also have a Canon L2, and wonder the same about it. Thanks in advance.
The flanges can scrape against the light baffles when collapsing a lens into a Canon P or Canon 7.
Best advice- open the back, open the shutter, and visually check while collapsing a lens into the body.

Wrap hair band around lens barrel. This will shorten collapsing amount. Plenty of colors to choose from

I used a hair band on my Summitar when I used it on a CL & a Canon 7.

Thanks, Brian and everyone else. It would be nice the hear from someone with regular experience with the Summitar and P, but I will surely do what Brian recommends in any event.

So it does look like the hair binder trick would work but you would have to do something like that or would end up damaging something. Good to know. Thank you for this practical experiment and photos!

Wow, GMOG, thanks for doing and showing this. Not worth taking a chance. Any use of the Summitar in the P will only be at full extension.
I have used appropriately sized o-rings on collapsibles. Makes for a very discreet, almost unnoticeable, look.
