r3a manual metering question

Why do both the "1" and the "2000" blink when I move my shutter dial off of auto and onto an actual shuter speed? Either one is supposed to blink when you are out of exposure range one way or the other, but they both blink in unison. at the same time I have the actual selected shutter speed lit up, and the other speed that I need to line up to the selected speed.
It will also remain that way for awhile after moving back to AE. It will "reset" it I turn the shutter button lock on then off.

Mine's doing the same thing. THe manual says that means the batteries are about to die. I noticed I left mine 'on' pretty much for about a year now.
