Well ,i was shooting last nite and the camera stopped functioning. LCD , Gagues work.
When i press the shutter release button nothing happens. Shutters not jam just not releasing. I changed batteries , SD cards and i still get nothing. When i turn camera off and then on again i can hear a small click on start up. Any Ideas on how to get it to function again?

Probably a failure of the shutter mechanism - it happened to mine and Epson replaced it (according to the work order I got back).

I was afraid of that. I guess i'll have to get ahold of epson and get it fixed under warranty.
Thanks for the help. I'll update as the drama unfolds.

Well i called Epson Germany and they can take a look at the camera. Problem is i bought it in the US and they say there is a us version and a ec version . So parts can be a problem.
Any thoughts on epson service in Germany?

Exactly the same happened to my RD-1. I phoned the French number and basically they said I had to send it to Epson UK to get it fixed there. They promptly sent it to France at a FIXED COST REPAIR price of £270 +VAT (17.5%) = £317 (roughly). I did get the camera back in about 10 days but I figure it was a refurbished body with my hotshoe switched (to retain serial number) No big deal - it works fine so far but I could not get Epson UK to tell me exactly what had been repaired/replaced - I wanted to know in case I could avoid any repetition. They did give me a three month warrenty so one of my resolutions for the New Year was to use the camera every day and - so far - it's fine. It's a worry tho' and makes me want to buy a second for backup - which is kind of perverse when you think about it.
Roll on an RD-2!!!

I bought a second R-D1 for backup about a year ago. So far, I haven't had to use it, so it's my "collectors" camera. :)

Thanks for all the advice. They want it to go to the service center in Paderborn Germany. Then i guess it gets packed off to France . I hope they can have it done before i return to the States.

As i was looking at this expensive door stop , i decided to tape the body near the shutter release button. Cue Music "it's alive" . So that makes me think it's a mechanical problem. When i advance the shutter a bit more forcefull than normal the camera will fire. My dilemma is send it off to epson in europe under US warranty and pay a small fee or wait till the end of feb when i'm back home in the states and send it to steve's camera when it's out of warranty? I have read on the forum that he beefs up the shutter assembly areas. The question is what to do?

The camera is working now . I shot like 400 shots yesterday and it didn't misfire once. Go figure. Could this be a happy ending?

I only bought my camera yesterday, but it did the same thing today. I turned it on, cocked the shutter, pushed the shutter release button, and nothing happened. I turned it off, heard a small click, turned it back on, same problem. After doing that a few times it started working. Now it seems OK. I'll remember the tapping idea. Maybe I need to start carrying around a small hammer!

Back in the 60's we had a TV set like that. Slap it hard on the right side and it would straighten out, (or was it just my brother and me?)

Carefull with the tapping . I knocked the range finder out of aligment at infinity ,but all is in order now . I followed Rich Cutlers direction for adjusting the finder.
