Rainy Day Photos Problems. How To?

Every day here is bright sun, except the few days each year it rains. Like now.

I can do sunny photos, and now I want rainy photos. There's not much time to get up to speed before the rain stops.

The rain is on/off about 20 minutes at a time.

So I head off to a good location: nice streetscape, a good prop, people going about their errands, and, most importantly, a doorway for shelter when the rain starts. I even do the pre-focus and the exposure setting in advance.

Then the rain comes again. Heavy. Great. And I stand in my doorway waiting for the people to run past me and 'click'.

But they don't. They come and join me in the doorway. The street is empty.

This happened four times today.

Tomorrow is the last day of rain, and I want photos.

My only (crazy) solution is to go out on the sidewalk and photograph the people sheltering in the doorway. But I do not have a waterproof suit and an underwater camera.

What would you do?
 
use a camera that doesn't care overly much if it gets wet - I don't worry about my Canon P's over much - when I finish the roll I take off the lens, and leave the back open with a couple dessicant packs thrown in for a day or so - if they got really really wet.

wear a good hat.

or learn to shoot with one hand, and hold an umbrella with the other.

stand where you can see them coming and shoot pics of everyone running for the same doorway (yours)

Like the prvious poster suggests, take pictures of the people in your shelter. Have a look at "My Photos" (Steve Kessel) . I posted a few just such there.

Thank you. Tomorrow's likely my last day for months. I can get there dry, what I need is a location where I can stand and photograph them running for shelter on the other side of the street. Maybe I can find such a location.

Tape a hose to the top of a building and when someone passes turn the water on and then take a picture while they dash though the "rain." You can do this anytime of the year - until your neighbors beat you to death, that is.

Laughing at that idea.

I live right over a busy ATM.

If people got showered while waiting for their money would they wait and get wet, or would they run away? Some good photo opps there.

But no. It's where I bank and the manager and staff would none too pleased.
 
Doh! The rain has stopped, and will stay stopped for many weeks or months.

Thank you all for helpful suggestions which I can try out next time.

I have only one advice.
Move to the Netherlands.
I will be glad to switch with you, for your boring short-rained too warm too sunny Portugal.
