Raising the accessory shoe in my FED-2

I have a FED-2 with the low accessory shoe, and I was wondering if raising it by placing a square of aluminum below it is a bad idea.

Raising it would allow me to use the Voigtlander Kontur finder and maybe the Kodalux meter, and cutting a small square of 1.5mm thick aluminum and drilling it will take about half an hour. Are the holes for the shoe on the top plate tapped? Do I just need longer screws to fix the aluminum and shoe in place? Anybody did something similar?

I did exactly the same modification to mine to allow use of a fsu 35mm finder, I used 2mm ( I think ) thick alloy strip from the DIY supermarket. My top plate was not tapped, but whatever was underneath with the female threads stayed in place when the shoe was removed!, and I needed longer, countersunk head screws, I'm afraid I can't help identify thread pitch, type or diameter, as I found some in my 'bits' box that has accumulated over the years!

When I removed the shoe on a Zorkii 2C to make some adjustments to it, the plate with the threaded holes in it came loose and I had to take the top cover off of the camera to fix it. YMMV.
