Ralph Gibson - COOPH video

Have long Admired his work....
His Strength in Vision, Strength in Conviction.... make him Ralph Gibson

Thanks Klaus !
gave me some Inspiration ;)

...I just watched a recent (actually 2014) video of Friedlander in which he said he has the opposite approach to his work. He always carries a camera. He photographs whatever interests him at random all the time and never works on projects.....

I'm a fan of Charles Harbutt, who also works as you describe. He says, “I stopped working on ‘projects’ years ago. I was always protective of my freedom to make any picture I wanted, any way I wanted, any time I wanted. Projects took away that freedom and were a distraction.”

I suspect it has a lot to do with one's temperament - right-brained, left-brained, and so on. I once tried Harbutt's approach for a year and it just doesn't work for me. I do better with a plan.

It's interesting that he mentions to ignore critics. He should also mention to seek advice from those that he admires as it was Lange, after critiquing his work, that pointed him in the right direction.

I loved the scene where he passes the couple on the bridge with the selfie stick. If they only knew..

Great video, thanks for posting!

Taking advice from masters who photograph themselves can seriously improve what you are doing.
Granted the advice is right for your work and your personality.

Taking advice from critics as in "art critics" can lead down the shoddy road of wanting to please the critics...

it could, but there are lots of very creative and positive relationships between artists and critics, curators, and professors.

I think a good rule of thumb is whether or not the advice resonates with you.

Meaning - is the advice pointing out something that suddenly rings true for the kind of work you do?
Does it point out something that you recognize as the basic truth that you just didn't realize before?

Or is the advice just pointing into a direction that is currently the popular opinion?

It's pretty clear that Ralph Gibson found his niche and never went for the popular route.
I guess this is the only way to stay relevant for such a period of time and still be as motivated as he still is.
