I've started a blog to just stick images I like out there without the need to edit and organise that my website requires to make it coherent.

Most of the images are taken with rangefinders. My favourites are my Zorki 1, Zorki 4K, Leica IIIa, Leica M6 and all are featured along with some SLR types (do use them when needed, I like Nikons!)

Have a look:

Comments from real photographers would be very welcome - I have had some interesting offers since I launched it but you can get a bit tired of them!

Thanks and best wishes to all

Donald

Donald,
Like the blog quite alot! I especially like "Letterbox" and "Irish Roads".
The saint in Irish Roads; are these placed where an accident happened? In parts of the US(on the smaller roads) there are roadside crossses placed where fatalities have ocurred. Usually by the relatives/friends of the victim.
I've book-marked your blog so I can find it again. Thanks for sharing.
Rob

Great photos. You guys make the most terrific photos out of what are often quite basic everyday items - such as the postbox. I must pass similar items myself on a day to day basis but my eyes don't see the opportunities yours' do. I'm not sure if I could "learn" to see a good photo, or if it's a case of if it's not "in you" already you ain't gonna ever learn it.

OlyMan, you can learn it. And it's not that difficult either. Look at those photos, see the objects in them and the way they're shot (shadow, reflection, texture, etc.) and try to recreate it in similar fashion. Why not walk your neighbourhood and find all the mail boxes and shot them, some from above, others from a child's point of view, from an extreme side angle, semi-shaded, backlit, in the rain, when someone with contrasting/same colour coat is posting a letter, when a dog urinates against it, etc. Or go for garden gnomes, car hood ornaments, garbage bags (I did that for while), front doors, etc.

The more you do and the more you see your world and more the look at other photogs' work, the better your eye becomes.

😀 Thanks for the encouragement RML 🙂 I reckon I'll try to do as you say. Though there's a state of paranoia in England what with the bombings of 7/7 and the perceived increase in child pornography "caused" by digital cameras & the Internet. In many eyes anyone found wandering the street with a camera is perceived to be either a paedophile or a terrorist! If you don't hear from me I got arrested :bang:

Funny you should say that. There has been some talk about photography in public places being banned altogether in London (and even other UK major cities), following the atrocities of 7/7. But yet immediately after the bombings the police were pleading for photos from amateur photographers who just may have accidentally captured pictures of the terrorists prior to the events. Smells of double standards and reactionary panic to me 😡 🙄 .

Anyhow I don't want to further gatecrash this thread by moving it further off topic.

Great photos, Donald!

Just as a brief followup to the above (not wanting to go to far OT), there's an article about the issue of photography in London in this week's Amateur Photographer (a followup to others published earlier this year). AP is suggesting that Ken Livingstone (to the uninitiated he's the elected Mayor of London as opposed to the Lord Mayor of London who I think is appointed each year) may be in the progress of doing a u-turn on the subject of banning photography in London in light of 7/7. They comment at least publically Ken isn't mentioning putting up notices banning photography in public places! As has been mentioned before - rather double standards.
