As Ferider suggested, I have tried to measure the contrast of the rangefinder patch (that is the difference of the brightness of the patch compared to the brightness of the viewfinder).

With some of the cameras, especially the Bessa and the Zeiss Ikon, it was close to impossible to measure the brightness of the patch with my spotmeter (a Gossen Spotmaster). Just the smallest movement, and I had a different result. So there might be some guesswork in there!

Well, here are the totally useless results 😀, the difference is in EV:
0.2 Olympus XA
0.4 Olympus 35 RC
0.4 Yashica GSN
0.4 Voigtländer Vitomatic II
0.5 Leica M2
0.6 Bessa R3A
0.6 Zeiss Ikon ZM
0.0 Nikon F3 HP (what, no patch? How did this evil thing get in here?)

I can focus with the patch with all of the cameras, even with the XA, where the patch is very small.

The winners for me in ease of focusing are the Leica and the Nikon, followed by ZM and R3A. The order might vary according to focal length of the lens and lighting conditions.

I have an old rangefinder whose patch was next-to-clear, so I took a Sharpie to the viewfinder and now it appears to be brighter than my Leica's! 😀
