i think this has been touched on before, but i couldn't find the thread. about rangefinder sightings in movies. just saw (what i believe is) the bessa/heliar limited edition in the movie "stander". pretty good movie too. it's a true story about a police officer (a captain, no less) in apartheid-era south africa that robbed a ton of banks (while being an officer, and afterwards as a fugitive). anyhow...he's laying around taking photos of his wife. nothing makes you feel quite like a camera dork like pointing out such a thing 🙄

Did the actor at least give the appearance he knew what he was doing? Considering
how closely linked photography and filmmaking are, it's shocking how inaccurately
camera use is depicted in movies. Frequently non-motorized cameras sound like
Canon T50s. There have been a few movies which came close, but offhand I can't recall which ones might have specifically featured RFs.

hey fred. he did seem to know what he was doing w/ the camera, and seemed very comfortable. he was lying around with his wife taking photos of her. i can't remember if it was in bed, or on the beach (one of the two).

thanks...i didn't realize there was another one so recent (as we speak)! i was thinking of another thread actually. it might have been in the thread about pecker, and then people digressed into other rangefinders in movies. maybe i'm just confused. anyhow...sorry for the double thread then 😀 and thanks for the list you liinked in that one. pretty comprehensive!

Camera noise is not related to accurate camera use, you know that 😛 The sound people will add the noise to let the audience know the camera actually fired -- if it's important to the scene (and if not, they may slightly enhance it if it needs to be heard). The majority of people relate to the typical motorized camera sounds, so they can assosciate that the shutter fired. It's the same concept as sword fighting and even hand-to-hand combat and etc. The sound guys actually have some fun, I've seen it in action (helped my buddy put together his senior year film in college). One of my fav noises is the "crunch" you hear during fighting, usually done by breaking a stalk of celery 😀

One of his shorts had a "sword fighting scene" where two guys battled it out with tennis rackets. We used a combination of kitchen knives and glasses to get various "ching" sounds. Took forever to get the timing right, but the result was actually... believable 😀

even p&s digital type cameras make a loud SLR shutter sound so the user knows the photo was taken. i almost died the first time i heard one of those (my old-ass 2.1 megapixel camera is silent through and through).

and yes...foley sound is a unique art. some of the combinations they use to make "believable" sounds is pretty outrageous!
