I am just venting here. This is not directed at anyone personally and no insults are intended.
It really bugs me when people upload five images at once to the gallery, because it hogs all the valuable real estate on the RFF main page, and pushes down the other recent photos on the main gallery page.
I haven't posted anything in the gallery for a couple of months and when I posted a new shot the other day, I was lucky that no one posted after me for awhile so it got a lot of time on the main page and a lot of views.
I posted another shot last night but a succession of multiple posts of five shots from others quickly buried it and it got hardly any views and will probably fall through the cracks.
I like my photos to get a lot of views because I really count on the feedback I get from my fellow RFFers. That's why I post here. I get really annoyed when I've worked long and hard on a shot that I am proud of and it gets buried in a landslide of family photos at the beach, or various angles of someone's new M2 in a Billingham bag!
If I have a whole batch of new images I want to share I will try and post one a day throughout the week in order to give other members some time in the spotlight on the home page and the gallery main page. I just think this is the proper etiquette.
Does anyone else feel as I do? Agree or disagree? I don't know if I'm being pretentious or reactionary, but it's been a bee in my bonnet!

I wouldn't worry about it too much as I think most people who are interested enough to make comments look at the gallery itself rather than just the shots on the main page.

I wouldn't have five shots I'd want to post in one, not unless I got very lucky! I think Benlees is about right, most regular gallery viewers sift through the weeks shots anyway.

I see your points but sometimes there isn't enough time in the day to go through the whole gallery. I feel like I'm always missing out on something. I'm glad picks of the week is going strong but even with that it's hard to see all the good stuff.
I guess I wish we were all more considerate of this and would space out our postings so everyone gets a chance at some time on the home page where all the action is.

I personally feel that very few 'kit' photos get posted to the RFF gallery, especially in comparison to other photography websites, as there are so many threads here that cover those bases people tend to link to flickr images at RFF on the appropriate thread. I know i do!

Also, 5 posts per person per day seems like a good number to me! quite reasonable. again I've seen people fill the whole first page with a (usually questionable) series on other forums without breaking a sweat. and I may be playing devil's advocate here and trust me, my photos (that are rarely posted 5 at a time although it has happened) usually get no comments and few views unless they show some female flesh and even then they don't get commented on, they just get gawked at. it's probably because my pictures aren't very good and no one wants to say anything negative but that's another matter that i can livel with.

i feel that if you want some real recognition for your photography on RFF then you're better off putting it in a thread, be it an exisitng one or a new one.

It's not about recognition but about everyone getting their fair crack at their work to be viewed.
I probably didn't adequately express my meaning!
I also don't want to imply that anyone here loads the gallery on purpose to gain maximum exposure. I just wanted to suggest that if we all space out our uploads maybe we'll all get to see more of each others' work.

Actually a good topic: I've never posted in the gallery before and it could have happened that I would have posted 5 pics at atime without thinking that much...
And it's true: I usually get interested when I see a pic on the homepage and check the photogs other pics later. So it has a valid point

I wonder if it would be possible to scroll the gallery image strip on the home page, without having to click into the gallery?

yeah, it's frustrating but timing is everything. You can watch the gallery for a week and you'll find certain days like Sunday night and Monday morning seem to attract alot of uploads. The middle of the week, early in the morning seems a good time if you want to be seen. At least that's what I've noticed.

At least your honest about why you post images, to be seen, many people here value the views and comments on their photos. To be fair though, posting five images at once may be the only time the member has to post them.

Personally if a shot on the main page catches my eye I'll click on it. Otherwise I go to the gallery once in about 20 visits. So I understand what you mean.

I have a separate shortcut directly to the gallery main page on my desktop ... I also set the forum viewing software to show me sixty thumbnails on that page.

I don't mind someone posting five images of whatever they want to be honest because supposedly we're a democracy here and whether their shots are boring family stuff or gear snaps ... that's their right. What I don't like is when they post all five images to mutiple galleries and suddenly you have five times three and the same images dull or interesting are repeated pointlessly over fifteen thumbnails. :(

I personally prefer to see people posting their pics in a series as it tells you much more about their photographic vision ... a random shot as good as it may be always leaves me wanting more and tells me little about the photographer.

You can post it in a series in your own gallery without uploading all five images in one go.

And I'm not saying people don't have "the right" to post all their images at once. I'm just asking for a little consideration for the prime viewing real estate.
At the end of the day it's just a little thing that irked me and I was just wondering if anyone else felt the same. Surely not as important as a celebrity death!
Okay, I'll stop calling you Shirley!

You're hired.

BTW when I view the gallery I'll scroll a dozen pictures and post my humble opinion on a few. I agree, however, posting 5 in one fell slew might not be the best procedure. I dont mind someone's family or party pix if well taken.

Would be nice if people posted shooting data otherwise the fotos become jibberish.

Keith, how? I hunted around, even posted a question, to try to increase the number of images on the gallery page. Where is the option to increase the number of thumbnails?
I always make it a point to view the thumbnails on a regular basis, sometimes needing to go back a page or three to catch up (which does seem a bit of a bother and would like to show more on the page). I think if you are going to post and are wanting/hoping for views and comments, then you likewise should take the effort to view the images of others and post comments. A few encouraging words go a long way.

Just under the search function, top right, there is a drop down menu that offers a range of twelve to ninety per page ... I'm talking about the 1 day page not the general gallery home page. :)

True what you say about giving and receiving ... sometimes I get a bit lax but I do try to keep my involvement in the gallery balanced. When I first started posting images I remember how pleasing it was to get comments on a pic! By the same token I find it hard to make a comment about an image that I don't believe has any strong merit ... just shooting the breeze with this function is a little pointless IMO!

OK, keep educating me, what is the "1 day" page? Is there a page to go to other than clicking Gallery in the main menu bar?

Totally agree.

OK ... now on the gallery main page beneath the thumbnails on the right is the search box. Underneath that there are four links to either one day, seven day, fourteen day or all, page display.

The one day link will bring up the thumbnail images that were posted in the gallery less that twenty four hours ago ... they also have info boxes under the thumbnails whereas thumbnails on the main page do not. :)

What I'd like to know is why I haven't been able to upload a single blessed image to my gallery in months...I simply get the usual "exceeded daily quota" reply. Have to figure that out.

Edit: Hmm...just tried it again for the first time in ages, and, of course, right after ranting about it, it works. As Lyle Lovett would say, ain't it somethin'?

Edit II: And, now, strangely, several of the photos from my exhibit late last year are showing up (after several futile attempts), but not where I planned. Now, I'll have to delete them, then re-upload them where I intended them to be. Excelsior! :bang:

Edit III: Oh, how I kill thyself...didn't need to delete the silly things, just reshuffle them. I'll get this Internets thing down, honest.
