Noob: "What dSLR should I buy?"
WasANoobYesterdayButNowIsPro: "dude, you see all those white lenses at sporting events, all the pros shoot Canon maaaaaan. Definitely buy one of them."
Here's the hot tip you clowns: You don't need a pro camera. Your money would be better spent on a shrink if you really need one to bolster your fragile little egos. Buying a Canon will not make you a pro. Your photos will still suck, your girlfriend will still be fat and ugly (stop posting pictures of her for crying out loud) and you were never going to buy that 400 f2.8 that everyone says you should 'buy into the system' for.
(I shoot a Samsung dSLR BTW. Every time I've recommended the Pentax equivalent to a noob, some idiot who thinks he knows something pipes in with 'you need to buy into the Canon/Nikon system maaaan')
And then at a recent photo meet, some idiot made a jibe about me 'upgrading' by pinching his poxy friggin Canon 30d. Listen Fatso, you fat arsed f***, if I wanted to take photos as **** as yours maybe I would steal your ****ty camera but if I wanted to 'upgrade' I wouldn't be looking at a 30d... and don't lecture me about flash exposure when you clearly know NOTHING about it, you putz.
(Yep, bad day :bang: )

You must be getting emails from an online pharmacy from whom you can get something to help you with all that anger.
Check you SPAM filter if you haven't seen them in your inbox.

Why on earth would you recommend a minority system to someone starting afresh?

Yeah...
This is a point I make from time to time in my AP column in the UK.
I alsi get amused at people who buy the same camera again and again, usually a consumer SLR with standard zoom, trading in last year's model for this year's. See:
http://www.rogerandfrances.com/howmany.html
which is entitled, 'How many cameras do you need?'
Cheers,
Roger

Great article, Roger. I'm a big fan of TLRs myself, and have never used large format, but de gustibus non est disputandum.

You need to stay away from the forums at www.dpreview.com. I have a Samsung DSLR also. I paid $350 for it. I laugh at the guys who spend $5,000 for their DSLRs. Every year. I know they look down at me, but I don't care any more. You need an M8, just to shut them up...

Thanks, Nick. Obviously, my point was that everyone might benefit from establishing their own personal priorities, or at least, from thinking about them.Great article, Roger. I'm a big fan of TLRs myself, and have never used large format, but de gustibus non est disputandum.
I know that I'm unusual in having little time for TLRs but it's also a good example of how you can be browbeaten by others' opinions "This is a great camera, but I don't like it, so what's wrong with me?"
The answer, of course, is, "There's nothing wrong with you; you just don't like it..."

But photography really isn't about your own pleasure, or producing good pictures, is it? It's a perverse male-bonding ritual in which those with deviant viewpoints are beaten into submission by the credit-card alpha males.

Today I just found a thread on dpreview (yeah, I read the forum sometimes, just to laugh) where a nutjob is complainiing about his D3.
He says that since the D3X (or S, or whatever) is coming he's frustrated since he's going to have an obsolete camera, since he cannot buy another new one...
And no, he's not even a sport photog, in the same post he says he's just a hobbist...
...I really hope he was kidding...

2 or 3 of each make and format, for the fun of it =). Short on money? Use one, the one you like, to hell with pro stuff =)

My advice, get into the wet plate collodion process and albumen contact prints.

I doubt he was kidding. There are people so caught up with having the "latest and greatest", that they can't seem to enjoy actually USING something without obsessing over it.
Electronics are obsolete the day you buy them. Once you realize that, the choices become obvious.

"Gear Talk" is what photo nuts do when they can't get out to shoot. I'm not shrink but I think its a kind of a frustration release. Perfectly normal human behavior (I think).
