Rare Early Color 1900s Paris Photos

Many people tried to recreate the process and failed miserably, The institut Lumiere had some success but it's not perfect.

http://www.autochromes.fr/english/last.html exists as well. The knowledge is around, the system had been patented, published, licensed, imitated and was around just for longer than C41. Polaroid had a Autochrome-derived instant colour slide system up until a decade ago.

The problem with DIY attempts is that you do not only have to coat a filter layer (not that hard), but have to coat a panchromatic emulsion on top of that - making small amounts of well-sensitized emulsions and coating in darkness so far have been stumbling blocks for the DIY dry plate community even without the added complexity of a filter layer. But I expect that the progresses in 3D printing eventually will make small automated coating machines a reality, and once there is a market, some maker will distribute a suitable emulsion.

Thank you Sevo I forgot about autochrome.fr and the Albert Kahn collection. The problem isn't so much the emulsion but the color raster and the required pressure.

Ming photographers weren't anti color they just didn't have the money to afford autochrome plates as they were extremely expensive and had a very low sensibility.
B/W was a lot faster and less expensive. Heinrich Kühn and other photographers used Autochromes and made superb photographs with them.
