I'm not looking for one of these but do wonder about the "rarity" of a mis-print?

EDIT:
I do not understand why but the link I posted here gets redirected to some "Viglink" shopping site, NOT to the Etsy listing. If I enter the link directly into my browser this link does go to the Etsy page. Which has the VIOOH for sale with a mis-engraved or fake "E. LETZ" marking on the back of it.

I saw that one, and immediately thought "Fake." How likely is it that a mistake like that would be made by Leitz? I imagine (and am willing to be corrected) that even decades ago the engraving on the finder body was not done by hand one at a time. Maybe Leitz' manufacturing practices were more artisanal than I thought.

I have a chrome vidom with the "r" missing in "Wetzlar". Some said quality control immediately post war is less than that of prewar but the vidom is prewar so mistake do happen, even for Leica.

Hi,

Engraving was done usually by hand using a large guide and a smaller version was made using a pantograph frame. So it would be easy to miss something.

I can't speak for Leitz or Leica but that's how it was done in the 50's and 60's in factories I visited. I would expect whoever filled in the Woods metal to notice it...

Regards, David
