Rare pair: Kodak DCS and Leica M9

Its always interesting to look back at earlier technologies and think about how very primitive they were in light of today's stuff. And then to go on and grumble of course, about the fact that every time we buy a new camera its out of date a week later. But they are the two sides of the same coin!

This is exactly what I do too. I suppose it does showsus that the technology is still not that mature - its maturing for sure, but no technology that is surpassed so frequently can be called that. And its in the interests of the designers and manufacturers to make it so too for a while yet. It is easy pickings for them to be turning over a new camera every few months and having mugs like me rush in to and over our coin of the realm. Cest la vie.

But looking back also reminds me that I put off buying a DSLR till the Nikon D70s came along - nothing else it seemed to me gave sufficient bang for buck till then and the joy of owning one of these earlier cameras would have been outweighed by the poor quality results and awful cost in $ that would have been involved.

These are real world photos, taken under very dark conditions. Exposure is spot on. Obviously, there's less noise in the brighter ("properly exposed") areas.

Yes, I'm sure they could have been processed better, but that was my point - to show what the photos looks like more or less straight from the camera.

Again, it's pretty good up to 800 ISO. Above that, I think most people will be a little disappointed (obviously depending on their expectations). Feel free to disagree.

I'm thinking that new firmware will boost low light performance with lenses that do not require correction for vignetting. We'll know more when the technical specs are published on the KAF-18500.

Hi Brian - no, the E3 isn't exactly the prettiest camera around.. In any case, it's hard to beat a nice rangefinder ;-)

I have an F1 just like that! Came with the Chrome nosed 50/1.4 SC, but I put the SSC on it.

The other thing is very small compared with an E3.
 
Hi Nick,

A beautiful pair. Nikon's FE/FM-series are my all time favourite cameras. My first real camera was an FE2, bought brand new, shortly after its introduction in 1983.

Now, imagine a full frame digital FE/FM-type camera. That would really be something!

(Oops - I suddenly realized I'm in the Leica forum. Did I mention that the M9 is a fantastic camera as well?)
