Ratings in Gallery? Yes or No ?

That's the way they have always worked. You can rate only if you post a comment. I voted for them to stay. I more or less always use rating if I comment.

If that's the way it is SUPPOSED to work, then something is NOT working, since there are many images that have ratings but have NO associated comments.

I voted no for simple fact that having some people think your work/images suck is part of sharing your work. So if a person can't deal with that they should keep their pictures to themselves or only share them with people who will provide them with the praise they're seeking.

Have always Loved the Idea of Commenting....
Critiquing / Complementing/Suggesting, that works Wonderfully

But a rating seems a tad boring ...what's the point, does it really Offer the viewer or photographer anything worthwhile

I prefer the ' Written Word ' than a Number
so My Vote goes to Dropping the Rated Number Critique 😉

okay, I'll drop another dime on this topic . . . (just a re-phrasing of what some other folks said above)

if the viewer doesn't want to spend the time to write some commentary (let's say X words minimum ?) , they should not be permitted the luxury of clicking on a rating.

It's insulting to the image makers to have people click click click click click click click click click click click click their opinions of images on a website without leaving a written opinion.

But some people like being insulted...

"Another insult and, I think, a light one" (Pooh-Bah)

The "rate all the contest photos with ones" behavior is something I didn't really think I'd see on RFF. I'm surprised by it.

It's not the end of the world by any stretch, but it's a douchey thing for someone to have done.

Since people would like to express themselves by exposing their photos to others, there should be an option for the others to express what they feel about it.
Also, by accepting criticism you can only improve.

Which is why all photos are open to comment.

A rating is probably the most accurate and concise comment there is.

Many pics truly deserve a 1, 2 and 3 but without the rating system they will only get praise from a few friends or return-favors.
I certainly dont feel like losing 5 minutes of my time to comment on how one could improve or just comment on how missed it is. But giving 2 or a 3 would be direct to the point and a valuable feedback. As well as giving a 7,8 or 9.

The rating system calls for accurate overall feedback.
The comment-only system calls for praise only. Even the worst pictures end up receiving glowing reviews (from friends) and the negative reviews/reviewers tend to be demonized.

In conclusion, this thread has been valuable in understanding what it's all about: Mainly about sensitive people not really wanting to know their true level of photography. Positive feedback or no feedback at all.

Only in a world where people aren't annoying little putzes. We don't live in that world.

I would have agreed that they could be valuable, but for the fact that most ratings end up being 9 or so, when people even bother, and every photo in the photo contest being rated "1" is more vandalism than "concise and accurate comment".

. . . . .

Too too silly.

If ratings were accurate and concise every viewer would assign the exact same rating to any specific image. The fact that one viewer clicks "1" and another clicks "10" shows you how accurate and consise ratings are.

A numerical rating is the least accurate, least concise system, unless very strict criteria are defined and agreed to and lived by. Otherwise, numerical ratings are worthless, at best.

If you can't be bothered to type a one sentence comment about a picture, click out to the next picture.
