Ratio of portrait to landscape photos (camera orientation)

Looking at the Gallery, I have 50/87 in portrait format, despite mixed subject matter. I think this is unusually high. Who else can't resist turning things on their side?

The longer I shoot (45 years now) the less I like the vertical frame. I try to keep it horizontal most of the time, but I supose about a quarter of my pictures are still portrait these days. There was a time when pros shot a lot of portrait frames in hopes of increasing the chances of getting a cover shot on the mag they were shooting for. Then amateurs like me caught the bug. I think the horizontal frame has more energy as a composition.

I think this is also very depending on what and where you are shooting...
I noticed that the portrait orientation has its special something when it comes to shooting streetsceenes in areas with high buildings like Tokyo Shinjuku area..

Depends on what I'm shooting for.

With books/magazines you normally want a fair proportion of single-page portrait format images, but on screen you often want more landscape format. I try to force myself to shoot a mix (both, whenever feasible) so there's a choice.

I tend to shoot one landscape, and one portrait of each scene. Then make a choice later on as to which is the better composition. I have also been known to make portrait crops out of landscape photos, but it's kind of hard to do it the other way.
