RD-1 as backup to M8?

I'm considering getting RD-1 as a backup to my M8 (as I'm selling all my Canon stuff), before my trip next week. I would just test it, keep it in the bag, just in case, and sell it when I get back.

So, to sum up the questions: where, how much, how soon, which one?

Other ideas, thoughts, and recommendations? (I'm not going to sell the M8 and get two Rs, 😛)

I got mine used on here. Epson refurbs are $1500. Get it early enough to test out, to make sure it works, and replaced if it does not work.

Epson re-furbs are very scarce and kind of hit or miss. There are some used ones available now and again on eBay and in the Classifieds here at RFF.

You may have to buy a new one. I saw one on display at Calumet in NYC the other day for $2495 I believe. Otherwise the MSRP is $2999 from several sources.

Why not just take a film body that will take all your lenses - like a Leica M or a Bessa R2A or whatever? It seems kind of wild to quickly buy another digital rangefinder as a backup to a 5K camera. A new Bessa will only set you back $600 or so.

There are a bunch(6 or more!) on EvilBay right now. One, brand new from Calumet has a starting bid of $999.00.

Hmmm, maybe I need three R-D1s. Daily user and two backups...
