RD-1 off, LED flashing and meters jumping!

This must be a new disease. Upon replacing my battery, the memory card access light flashes and the meters start jumping while the camera is off! It does the same thing with all my batteries, whether the card is in or out. Any insight? Thanks for looking. Works fine when the camera is on.:bang:

I wonder if there is something funny about that memory card. Like maybe the camera can't recognize that the card is in place, so it thinks there is no card? Have you tried with a different card?

Thanks for reply. Does it with a different card or even no card. Its actually kind of cool. LED blinks in sync with jumping meters!😛

Take the battery out and let the thing sit for 48 hours. Maybe some sort of cpu crash and it has to reset with no juice.

Ok I tried the 48 hour no battery idea. No luck. Now the light flickers but the meters are dead whether it's on or off. Any suggestions for repair? Thanks!

Call Steve at Steve's Camera. He did a great job on my R-D1 and seems to know what he's doing.

Follow up. Steve couldn't fix it because of a faulty board connected to the battery. I guess its just one of those weird things. Perhaps its best to leave the battery out of the camera when not in use. Off to Epson, maybe they will replace it with the new R-D1x, fat chance. I'll be happy if the same camera comes back. Thanks for your suggestions.

Epson is still charging something like $550 as a flat fee repair, and you usually just get a swapped refurb, not your own camera back. They just switch the hot shoe so you have the same serial number.

Make sure you send it directly to Indiana, as per previous posts. NOT to an independent Epson facility for "evaluation", or it might take forever.

Thanks for info. I tried to send it to Epson in Indiana and you would not believe the BS run around I got. The facility in Indiana only accepts camera under warranty. I tried to get Steve to send it in and he told me its not possible. Anyhow Steve cant fix it, so rather than deal with Epson I got a r-d1 on ebay in good user condition for $750. I'll sent it in to Steve so he can swap out the defective board. Isn't $750 for a an R-D1 in decent condition a good deal? Whoever answered at Steve's camera said I paid too much. I don't get it.

I think $750 is a good deal. I think up to $1000 these days is okay. I think anyone buying one now has to figure on some kind of repair in the future. The circuit board problems sounds scary; shutter problems are to be expected at some point. I suspect that it used to be easier for Steve to get parts from Epson, and the comment might reflect that. On one of my two bodies, (my original one) there is a problem with the hinge being loose on the screen; that part is no longer available to Steve from Epson (and perhaps is part of the reason Epson went to the fixed display on the newer model).
The R-D1s bodies are newer, so the price range could be extended. But as used M8 prices fall, a consideration has to be that M8s are likely to be repairable for a longer period of time.

Thanks Sevres. After Steve repairs it, I'll sell the spare one for parts (hopefully to Steve). Its hard for me to justify holding on to a spare since I have a M8.

Well Steve still has it. Says he's going to call but didn't, says it's fixed and is going to email charges but hasn't yet. Is this Steve's normal way of doing business? I'm loosing my patience.

No its not yours, it's my RD-1s. Yours is still good to go! Well Steve fixed it but I had to buy a user RD-1 for a part he needed. If anyone wants it for parts, drop me a PM. Thanks everyone!!!

hmm... so sending it back to Epson wasn't a better solution than organ transplant?

Thanks to all you good souls who convinced me to repair my spare R-D1 instead of selling it for parts. I just got it back from epson total refurb except for the worn hotshoe to keep the same serial number! I decided to keep that one and sell off the R-D1s. It's in better shape. Keep your eyes peeled for a better than new R-D1s since it was just serviced by Steve. I'll post it in the classified in a day or two. Need to take some nice pics of it.

It seems the R-D1 can either be the best of cameras, or the worst of cameras. Some people never have a bit of trouble, while others have nothing but trouble!
