Sorry for bringing up again this subject, but I need some information about the sending process at Epson France. My RD-1 spent a day with me at the sea and together we got caught by a big wave :( I instantly removed the battery and dried the camera, but the next the shutter didn't work anymore. It was just a bit of water entering, but of course the salt entered too.

We tried to reach the Epson Engineering S.A. service number indicated by Rich Cutler, which was first impossible with our VOIP telephone. When I used the "normal" phone, I was able to dial the number.
Of course nobody knew anything about the RD-1, but after 30 minutes I finally received the "numéro de retour", so I'm allowed to send the camera for repair. A big problem was, that I don't have an address in France.
But also the serial number! They said, they have to type in 10-digit serial number to open a process. All my explanations were in vain, at the end he invented a number

Did somebody have the same problem? I'm still thinking if I should send the camera to France...

How can I make sure that a specialist will check the camera?

Last time i've used it was in 2006 so i don't know if the address changed since then:
Epson Engineering Europe SA

Fax: +33 156715726

Well, the official serial number is indeed 10 digits, but only the last six digits are on the camera (hot shoe). For the first four digits, you need to check the paperwork that came with the camera when new.

See this thread for more details:

Proof - R-D1 Serial No. is 10 digits !!!

Well I sent mine to the same address (Epson France) because the gauges stopped working.

The epson support guys on the phone ignored that epson even makes cameras (!) so it looked very suspicious and i felt like sending my camera to the grave as i was packing it :) It took me a great deal of efforts to get the "numéro de retour)

However the epson service is very professional. A few days later they sent me a letter (called "devis") which states the repair costs; they expected me to send back an answer (either cancel the repair but still pay 45 euros to recover the cam, or cancel the repair don't pay but epson keeps the cam, or pay the full repair price including cleaning which was estimated at 90 euros). I paid and got the camera back fully repaired, cleaned, well packed 4 days later.

Had the same experience 4 years ago. Good to know that Epson still supports the camera. Thks for sharing.

The first four digits of the 10 digit serial number are on the sticker on the base of the camera. The last six digits of the 10 digit serial number are the six digit number on the hot shoe.

good news indeed.
Otherwise try the french shop in Paris "Photo Suffren" (search on the net for exact contact details). They used to do the warranty repairs for Epson, if I am correct.
Now they still service some bits, like the viewfinder.
