RD-1 Shutter Tip/Warning

Just wanted to pass this on, it was told me by someone with a great deal of experience with the Seiko shutter in the AE Bessas, Zeiss Ikon and RD-1:

These shutters can jam if they are re-cocked before the blades have come completely to rest. That would be especially likely at slower shutter speeds (manual or auto). So be careful when doing rapid-fire shooting, or if your habit is to fire and wind quickly.

thanks, but I was under the impression that the wind/cock mechanisms lock up during longer exposures. This might explain all the recent shutter threads. People handling them like sports cameras...

My understanding was that the Zeiss Ikon shutter at least was Copal. 😕

My R-D1 shutter locks during the exposure. You would have to break it to use enough force to wind on. Perhaps that is what you are referring to?

I believe the RD1 has a Copal shutter (see attached pic of my camera's innards)

I remember reading about this over a year ago - it was a problem with the Bessa's, not too sure about the RD1 though.

My RD1 was the first guinea pig that went to Steve's Camera, so Steve basically stripped it down completely to get familiar with it, taking pictures along the way. The rest of the pictures can be seen on Rich Cutler's RD1 site:

Guys I'm not an authority on what brand of shutter is in the RD1. I simply happened to have a conversation with a well-known fellow who has a close relationship with Mr. Kobiyashi (sp?) of Cosina fame, and much experience with all their derivatives and that's what he told me: "be careful not to wind on while the shutter is still in motion". Maybe it is locked during a long exposure but it may be possible to wind just as the blades close at the end of the exposure and that's apparently where it can get jammed up.
