I seem to have asked the question a couple of times here. Has any RD1S user ever tried to adjust vertical misalignment through the hotshoe and succeed? If yes, you must be right but i've got no response to my questions so far.

You mean w/o removing the top plate? If so, there are clearly 2 kinds of R-D1s's effectively. Difficult to know which is which before removing the hotshoe though. So my advice remains the same. Better choose a R-D1 for sake of precaution.

i only removed the hot shoe.
as in the illustrations in rich cutler's rf adjustment section, there are 4 screws, only 2 can be seen with the hot shoe off. #2 is directly in view and #3 is off to the side and a bit tricky to access with a screwdriver but doable. (iirc)
i had to adjust both, one a bit more than the other.
i did not remove the hot shoe on the rd1.

Hi Chaps,
Was just reading this thread the it seems there may be different RD1s units. Would it be possible to find out which serial numbers have the alignment screw like the RD1 and which ones have a lock screw that means the whole top need's removal in order to re-calibrate it.
I was told by a guy from Epson the RD1s cannot be aligned like the RD1 because it was locked in place.
If 2 of you can tell me your RD1s serial numbers: The one which is like the RD1 and the one that isn't I could compare my serial number against it 🙂 Would be nice to know what i'm dealing with. However the guy at epson told me it's much better to have the RD1s because it's much less likely to become mis-aligned over time.
So far my 1 year old unit is fine 🙂

I don't really want to start popping the top off my RD1s if there is nothing wrong with it. mine is #102780 so i'm guessing i'm from the late batch.
Is it reasonable to think the later batch of RD1s would be different? Anyhow, of the people with RD1s's which RF's managed to mis-align, how did this happen and over what period of time? and what heavy use?
I carry mine every day for nearly a year and the alignment is near perfect.

Joe, what size screwdrivers did you use?
Did you adjust vertical alignment only, or did you go the whole 9 yards and adjust patch focus, horizontal alignment at infinity and horizontal alignment at 1m?

The R-D1s was still available new in Tokyo until just a few weeks ago. Now there's a gaping hole in the display cabinet at Fujiya where it used to sit. Anyone got experience with an R-D1x yet?

I love the camera it gives totally superb results and apart from slight issues with rangefinder masks I have had no probs!!!
If it rolls over what can I replace it with?????
Not sure what issues there might be with battery life I have 3 epson batteries and really never had a problem with shooting to my hearts content in Raw and Jpeg mode
Have a number of cards and am quite happy to change cards as they fill up
Download to a portable hdd as and when really not a problem with the 2 mb card
Am hoping to save up for an M8 to match my lenes but dont believe will be any significant improvement over the epson

I still want to see an actual user of the RD1x do a subjective review. My point of interest will be the RF adjustment and shutter improvement.

I've only just got my RD-1. A late adapter one could say. I'm chuffed as can be, and wouldn't look sideways at any other version of the camera, or indeed any other camera. OK, I'll pick up the D2X when need be, but that's it. From what little info is available on the net, I can't see why I should consider "upgrading" either.
EDIT: Mine has the RD-1s firmware upgrade.

Hi guys,
I have just bought a RD1s and had the sensor cleaned.
How do i know if the RF alignment is off?
Also, is it true that it only takes 2GB SD card?
I have also just realised that it does not allow me to choose JPEG only. It has to be RAW and JPEG together.
Please advise.

If you move the switch below the shutter-cocking lever to the "Q" position and rotate the jog dial on the left, you can switch between the settings "N" (normal quality JPEG), "H" (high quality JPEG) and "R" (RAW file). The menu setting for "RAW" vs. "RAW+JPEG" only controls the behavior when "R" mode is set on the top deck dial.
I think a read through the manual might be in order. 😉
