RD-1 - worth it to get one now?

it's better for non glass wearers.

with my specs on the 35 and 50 are easy to use but the 28 is iffy. i just 'visualize' in my mind ...i got the magnifier made by jpan exposures (former magnaperl) - sp? and it's very nice with the 50.

Definitely gonna try to track one down but somethings gotta go. Think it's gonna be the Hexar Silver, Nikon D80 and Tamron 17-50/2.8. That should raise a few quid.
 
If one were to find a new rd-1 at a camera store (I know of one), what would the warranty be like? Is Epson still servicing them?

Also, if I am not enamored with film, what would be the point of keeping my m6 and m3?
 
@backalley: yes you are... when you got yours, and I took a look at your thread, I was bitten by the GAS bug... now,with all the praises I hear, I'm convinced... time to start saving up and sell stuff I don't need! 🙂
 
@JayC: I think Epson will still service them, since they'll be releasing the RD-1xg soon, with basically the same specs, though with SDHC capabilities and other improvements (though the lack of swiveling screen IMHO is not an improvement) means that Epson will still be supporting their cameras...

Question: I've been reading about firmware updates on the RD-1, does this make it a virtual equal of the RD-1s? HOw do you upgrade? Can we still download the FW update?

I am very near sighted and have thick glasses. The R-D1 VF is no problem for me. I can see the widest 28mm frame line with little difficulty. (That's a 42mm effective focal length with the 1.5x crop factor). By the way, the R-D1 view finder is a 1:1 finder, so you can easily use it with both eyes open. I use an external finder for focal lengths wider than the 28mm built-in lines. It also has a nice rubberized eye piece to protect your glasses. Much more thoughtful than Leica who makes you pay $90 extra for the same (at least on a film body).

The V2 firmware is the same for the R-D1 and R-D1s. The R-D1s seems to differ only minutely from the R-D1. According to posts here, the R-D1s view finder is harder to adjust and doesn't stay in adjustment as well as the R-D1, but I'm just repeating what I have read here. I have no personal insight into that. Either camera is wonderful, but I must admit I'm glad I have the R-D1. I don't think anyone yet knows what RF alignment will be like on the R-D1x. That has always been a weak spot of all the CV-manufactured RFs in my experience.

Hi !

I was fortunate to have found a very low-mileage R-D1 from a local seller who let me test the camera before buying. I bought it 1.5 years ago for 900 euro which included a 1.5x finder for the 15mm.

There have been similar good deals on ebay and often I have been tempted to buy a second body. Attached is a table of those auctions I have been watching over the years. There were a few good deals in there.

I hope I get my hands on an RD-1 soon... my shutter finger is itching, and my legs are trembling to go out and shoot! 🙂 From what I gather here and in the other threads, looks like the RD-1 is a very capable and great camera!
 
Thinkfloyd, I was like you when I first saw the results of all the pictures here and the praise the R-D1 got from its users 1.5 years ago.
I've had my R-D1 in early January this year and I've enjoyed every minute of it (except that time when I lost the lens cap of my Ultron 🙁 ). It's been stealing quite a bit of time away from my classic RF cameras.

I've been using it with an LTM-adapter and several of my leica lenses lately. Good fun 🙂

Get one, play with it. If you don't like it, sell it.
 
back alley and all r-D1 rocks, all manual controls while shooting is key for me. Setting ISO so traditionally and without menue or buttons to press... Ergonomically it beats (for me) the M8 hands down. I even like the shutter cock lever, which makes me miss a shot or two in a while, but it slows me down as much as I like it to be. Rather think before you click...
 
@mr.flibble: I thought about that, but I doubt I won't enjoy it... as with drolo61, all manual controls are what tickles my fancy. Before i learned of the RD-1 (which was early this year -- being a solid SLR user since high school, I never bothered much about RF... I know, I know, shame on me...) I always dreamed of a digital version of my Pentax ME Super... shutter cock, manually focus, camera set to AE, shoot... then when I got my first RF, I learned of the M8, but it was lacking the "manual feel" (not to mention affordability, yikes!). So when I found out about the RD-1, it was all I ever dreamed of, it was love at first sight! ;D
 
Hi, I am new to the forum, but I have been watching the RD-1 threads for quite a while. I am also lusting after an RD-1 and have been eyeing an -s model at Yodobashi camera for sometime. The price at the moment is 249,000 yen new. I am not sure if it includes the skopar (attached to it on display) or not.

I use my wife's CLE on occasion, and I like the rhythm of working with a range finder (slr/dslr user for many years).

Has anyone made the transition? Were there any dramas?

I would appreciate hearing other's experiences.

in the price of 250k Yen has to be the lens, otherwise I wouldn't buy it there.
Ask marban where he bought his new one. He got back form Tokio a few days ago and only spent 800€.
