RD-1s AVAILABILITY

I would very much like to have a RD-1s, but where can I buy it...? I usually buy my photo gear in Singapore. Nobody imports them to Singapore, they say.

But also, where I live, in Oslo, Norway, I know of no shops that have it in their shelves or are that keen on selling them.

Why is this? In Singapore, the people at Cathay Photo (among others, a Leica dealer), one of the oldest photo shops in town with an extensive range of photo products, said that nobody covers the waranty in Singapore.

Further, I am sceptical to importing it from internet shops since quite a few seems to have problems with their DR-1. Is the RD-1s more reliable?

Or maybe should I just wait intil M8 is on the shelves?

The R-D1S is mechanically the same as the R-D1 so I doubt it is any more reliable. Have you tried contacting http://www.epson.no ? The camera is listed on the website (in English!)

Secondhand they appear on eBay from time to time (I think there is one on there at the moment from a reliable German seller - just bought a Voigtlander 12/5.6 from him)

Within Europe try Robert White, although they're not cheap...

One prominant dealer here in Oslo has a RD-1 in their shelves which is 2.hand in my opinion. Even the frame counter has reached more than 2000 exposures, but the dealer just pretend that this is a new product and wants 18.000 NOK (about US$2850 incl VAT).

I would have prefered to buy one in Singapore where I can buy tax free, but neither the RD-1 nor the RD-1s are being sold there. As far as I know. Is anyone more up to date with availability in Singapore?

Hi Olsen, the R-D1s is available in Singapore. It was recently launched. Street price about S$3300. Available from Cathay Marina or Peninsula Plaza.

Epson Singapore recognised the demand of the R-D1 here and finally agreed to bring in the R-D1s when it was launched.

On a similar note, is the camera available for sale in the U.S.? I haven't seen it listed as for sale anywhere. And the RD-1 is disappearing. The Mamiya ZD is also available elsewhere in the world, but not here. Anyone know why?

$3300? Are you shure, Terence? I would expect lower prices in Singapore than here in Europe.

Olsen, Robert White in UK has it for £1192, see here, that's $2250. Add the shipping (£35) and the customs/VAT of your country, and it will probably still be significantly cheaper than $3300.

If you read my post carefully, I said S$3300, not US$3300. S$3300 (Singapore dollars) is about US$2050. Tourists are offered a tax rebate too.

Not shure. The logical price decline has already happened in the past two months. The M8 will be expensive enough that enough people will prefer the R-D1s.

Or do what I did, get a used R-D1 for less and install the firmware upgrade and hey presto, becomes a R-D1s.

Like you I did find the asking price a bitt stiff compared to RW.

I have not upgraded my R-D1 - and I will be verry happy if someone can inform me were to find the download program for the firmware upgrade

I have just been to Singapore, in June, and spoke to Sam Jeva at Cathay Photo Marina Square (I usually stay at Conrad Hotel, right across the street), and they had no RD-1 by then, and had still not decided to take it in due to warranty problems.

Nor did they sell Zeiss Ikon. Probably due to that Cathay Photo is a prominant Leica dealer. But I bought one at Shriro, at Plaza Singapura, Orhcard Road. As you might know; Shriro owns Hasselblad of Sweden.

Now I am not going back to Singapore before March next year....

By then the Leica M8 will be just as hot. By the way...

Sam told me some years back that the then Indonesian president was a good Leica customer of his. Looking him up on Google you see why Jusuf Habibie is so Leica and germanianofile...

I just made an exposure with the camera, and pu the memory card into reader coupled to an Apple computer at the shop and read the file number. That easy.
