I just made an exposure with the camera, and pu the memory card into reader coupled to an Apple computer at the shop and read the file number. That easy.

Ah, simple once you know how (as the bishop said to the actress.) I take it this only works if you have the sequential-file-numbering option turned on, which I do.


Let's see, just over 7,400 clicks on my R-D 1 -- that would be the equivalent of about 205 rolls of film. At $15 per roll (what I used it figure it cost me to shoot one roll of T-Max P3200 and get it processed and contacted) that would have cost me about $3,075... so I figure the R-D finished paying for itself about 200 exposures ago.

Hmmm.... that means I'd need to shoot about 11,750 frames to rationalize the rumored cost of a Leica M8 -- guess I'd better get busy!

Not really a reliable method for checking the frame count (amount of use) on a secondhand R-D1 though. I had the sequential-file-numbering option turned on, but turned it off after about a 1,000 exposures. I then returned to the sequential-file-numbering, but the camera then only counted upwards from that point i.e. approx 1,000 frames less than actually shot.

I believed there's a trick to find out the effective count of expsoures?

I'd be more interested in finding a trick to reset it to zero as I bought my camera secondhand. As it is I just have to remember to subtract 330 from the frame count...

Not that big an issue as my workflow means I don't preserve the frame number anyway...

Go to Sequential Numbering under Settings\Basic Setup in the Menu. Turn from ON to Off.

I have just been to Singapore, in June, and spoke to Sam Jeva at Cathay Photo Marina Square (I usually stay at Conrad Hotel, right across the street), and they had no RD-1 by then, and had still not decided to take it in due to warranty problems.

Nor did they sell Zeiss Ikon. Probably due to that Cathay Photo is a prominant Leica dealer. But I bought one at Shriro, at Plaza Singapura, Orhcard Road. As you might know; Shriro owns Hasselblad of Sweden.

Now I am not going back to Singapore before March next year....

By then the Leica M8 will be just as hot. By the way...

Sam told me some years back that the then Indonesian president was a good Leica customer of his. Looking him up on Google you see why Jusuf Habibie is so Leica and germanianofile...

Did you mean to say you picked up a ZI at the Shriro store?

The R-D1s went on sale barely a month ago here in Singapore. It's met a somewhat successful launch with a couple of acquaintances of mine picking a few up. Suddenly I seem to have many other R-D1 counterparts to swap war stories with.

Thanks for your comments on the blog. I'm sure you're well acquainted with the culinary treats here in Singapore, it's not known for much else besides its food!

I paid $2459, he seems to have lowered the price now. Very satisfied with it, except everything was in Japanese (you can change the camera menus to your language of choice). Camera was shipped from Japan to US and delivere in 4 days.

I'd have to also agree that the price will not drop with the release of the M8. That camera is in a price range of its own and people will come running - as I have - to the RD-1s for refuge. Yes, I'm in the market for one (a used RD-1 would be fine!)

I don't see many posts from Canadians so I'll add to the thread. Does anyone know where I can purchase one of these in Canada (and in particular in the Toronto/Montreal area?). I have called multiple shops and no one seems to have it...

I called Calumet today and in their San Francisco and New York stores they have some R-D1's in stock (not R-D1s) for $2409.

I have read several posts on RFF referring to some kind of total exposure counter in the R-D 1, such as the above mention of "more than 2000 exposures."

Could someone tell me how to access this? Thanks...

Maybe you have an answer by now but I'll suggest giving this shareware a try:

It's an EXIF editor and works for the Nikon D70 and should work for the R-D1 since I believe EXIF is a "standard". Windows only.
If you have a Mac, Graphic Converter (free trial) works for the D70 and I will be trying it on my used R-D1 when it arrives.

Both these programs provide the "total" shutter actuations for the camera when you open a jpg or tiff.
