I want to thank everyone who has posted positive comments about the Rd-1s because you are right, it is a great handling camera and the image quality can be excellent. I have been playing around with the RD-1s for about a week. All I have for a lens is a Summicron f2 50mm (FoV of 75mm).

I have posted a few shots on my gallery (RD-1s Gallery) incuding some medium resolution shots. Look carefully at "Crystal" and "Texas Historical Marker". Granted these are jpgs but the quality is there. Click here.

The one thing I have discovered is that this camera can do wonderful things from an image quality standpoint IF, and this is a big IF, you use almost all the whole image, set up a good workflow, profile the typical image very deliberately, and use CS tools very carefully. My DSLR is a Canon 1DsMkII and of course boasts a FF sensor and still produces the most Kodachrome imitation of all the Canon pro bodies. But I love carrying around the RD-1s and it has some real potential.

I just ordered a CV 15 from Stephen Gandy which hopefully will arrive this week and will try some WA street stuff then.

I'm with you. I recently decided to dip my toe into the digital waters after coming back from an event with 450 negs and feelling crushed by trying to sort and scan them. I bought a D100 (I have a lot of Nikon lenses), almost LNIB, for the bargain price of $350. I found that so seductive that I bought one of the Epson refurbs when they became available a couple of weeks ago. It got its first real outing yesterday, and I am really enjoying using this camera. The pictures are very good and the camera handles very nicely. It's not an M, but even the loftily-priced M8 isn't exactly a film M, so for now, and with the cost of the Epson in mind ($1400), I'm quite happy.

What lens are you using on the Epson? The 50mm summicron (FoV - 75mm) I am using is a wonderful hunk of glass for 30 years old. I am waiting for a CV 15 which would be about a 24mm on the Epson.

Thanks for the nice comments JJ Kapsberger. I mentioned in another thread that the way the RD-1s handles (manually cock the shutter, see more than the lens FOV, the slow and elegant operation) has me "seeing" things I just don't see with my DSLR. I am taking pictures (seeing) like I did back when I owned Leica film RFs.

I am convinced that at least for me, having both DSLR and an RF is the way to go.

I did recently read your article about Winogrand. I enjoyed a lot while reading. I did learn something useful from your article. Thank you for sharing your memory of your experiences with the amazing guy as Winogrand. Somewhat I better know now how I continue because one of my big inspirations is Lee Friedlander 🙂

Funny that I have also only 50mm summicron when I played about a few weeks with Rd1 now 😀 I hope you'll somewhen start to like M3 😀

Glad you liked the Winogrand story. I have gotten a lot of positive comments from it, in fact so much that I was surprised at the numbers.

I have always like the M3 (had one - or was it an M2?) and the Leica CL. But years ago I needed to fill out my Nikon lenses for some work and sold all my RF stuff.

These days I am committed to digital, and one day hope to get the Leica M9 😀

For the moment, I changed 15 and 35 Voigtländer for a Summicron M 50 f2 in like new condition, and I'm very happy with this one, now i have to save for 21mm
Congratulation for your new toy, The RD-1 is a fantastic camera.

Thanks Villain.

The 50mm turns into a 75 f2 on the RD and provides a great lens for detail work/portraits. I am hoping the 15mm CV I ordered isn't too wide because I want to keep my RF kit down to two lenses - a 24/28mm FOV plus the 75/85mm FOV, a small flash and plenty of SD cards 😀

When you get that 21mm let me know how you like it. I am trying out the CV 15mm (should arrive later this week) but if it is too wide I may switch to the 21mm.
