Especially if you're used to M bodies as it's already larger. I'm using a metal grip that I got from a fellow RFF'er that was designed for a Nikon I think, it's extremely well made, all metal, and machined very well.
It allows me to quickly grab it out of the bag, and also carry it for hours tirelessly with a solid grip, where previously I was using it with nothing, not even a strap, as even a strap made the whole bundle just bigger.
I'm using mostly a 35 Cron asph, Nokton 50/1.5, and ZM Biogon 28/2.8 right now.

I like the Luigi case. Yes, it makes it fatter, but you soon get used to it. I have found that the naked "skin" tends to get sticky after about an hour's use. The case prevents that. Mine is green, with a green mini-softie. It looks very cool. Highly recommended.

I have Mr Zhou´s and am satisfied. It fits well the camera and is about one third of Luigi´s. It makes it bigger but I feel safer, especially about knocking off the finder.

I don't use a fitted case nor do I see the need for one. I typically throw in my R-D1S with attached lens and another one or two lenses in a shoulder bag when I'm not shooting, so I really need is enough protection so they don't bang against each other yet allow quick access.
Domke inserts do the above jobs very well: a "one-pocket" insert for the R-D1S and attached lens, and a "2-pocket" insert for an extra lens or two.

I too am looking for a case. I've seen an Artisan & Artist case from Japan. Really nice, but unfortunately they went out of production long ago and there is no back stock.
No offense to Mr. Zhou or anyone who has a "Zhou case", but from the pics the material looks like "p-leather" - fake leather. I have no experience with them, this is only my first impression.
I travel a lot and would prefer not to carry a bag if at all possible.
Looks like i'll be going naked until a reasonable alternative arises.

Luigi at leicatime can do a custom case for you as well. You can pick the colors of both the leather and the stitching.

Thank you all for the information. I can easily see both side of the case vs. no case debate. Will have to wait and see what my experience is au natural and make a decision based on that.

Yes. There are several options out there. If not, one can always consider the original leather case from Epson itself.

Unlike other cases, this full leather case is only about US$140 brand new from most ebay stores. There are also 2 points of interest to note.
1. Unlike other cases, the original Epson leather case allows you to access the SD card without removing the whole case.
2. Unlike other cases, the original Epson leather case allows you to swivel the LCD panel without removing the case.
The top half of the case is removable to convert this into a half case.

the Epson case is perfectly fine. It doesn't smell as nice as a Luigi case, but it's efficient, compact, access to the screen is easy, and the detachable top is great, in that you can drop it in a car trunk without worrying about it. It's easy to justify a Luigi for a luscious classic M3, but I would say the Epson case is much more appropriate, gives better protection, and is better value, for the R-D1, even if it's not as fondle-able. It's plain black leather, not as matt as the Luigi.

depends on what you want. if you want protection anyone will do the job. I didn't use mine until I got a Luigi's case in "rally" color which is like a vintage dark brown with the built-in grip and the camera not only looks very beautiful but also keeps its like new condition.

Hmm, never even thought about full cases. Is it big enough for the R-D1 w/ an Ultron 28 attached?

With some fiddling, old Kiev 4am cases (value: $5) also work for the Epson... but I would say if you can afford a Luigi case, go for it. The smell alone is worth the price... I have the less costly machine-sewed half case model. This one has the advantage of a stiff base, the camera stands even with a 50/1.2 canon lens and hood.
