Hi Folks,

My rd1 was working fine until until I set it aside a few months ago. Tried playing around with it today and noticed that the lcd wont turn on despite depressing the button.

I've tried powering off and on; removing sd card; inserting different sd, etc. Nothing seems to work.

I know the camera is powering up--will shoot pictures, etc. Just no lcd.

I apologize if this is a tired topic for some of you--I'm new, and I don't know what's been talked to death, although I did go through the forum threads to find my solution.

I'd hate to send the body in for repair.....

If anyone can help, I'd greatly appreciate it!

I haven't heard of this problem before. I can't think of anything to suggest other than sending in for repair. If you get any information back about what caused the problem, then we would all like to hear about it.

Best wishes for a speedy recovery (for your camera)!

Phil

I experienced problems with the dials not returning to the zero position and the shutter remaining open. This would happen when non-proprietary batteries were running low on power. The solution for that problem was as follows.

Remove the battery and fully recharge it, then turn the camera on and and off without the battery inside, then insert the recharged battery and turn it on.

Did you ever find a solution to this problem? I am having the exact same problem. After a couple of months of not using my Epson, the LCD no longer works. Everything else does.

I would bet on battery issue.
If you have multiple batteries, see if this is occuring with one or all of them.

I received 3 batteries with my R-D1 (all used).
I started noticing LCD issues, after doing some reading, decided to try and pin it to a single battery.
Turned out the problem only occurred with 1 of the 3 batteries I own.
I stopped using the 'bad' battery and have not seen LCD problems again, almost a year later.

I have never had this issue using either Epson or 3rd party batteries. Of course, I do use my R-D1 almost daily, so I have never set it aside for a long while to see what would happen.

Thanks for the replies...I am recharging all of my batteries as we speak...so hopefully, it will solve the problem. This is seriously one of the weirdest problems that I've ever seen. One day, the LCD is working perfectly, and the next, it won't turn on. I tried to Google this problem, and this was the first result that came up. Unfortunately, I didn't find any other useful result.

I don't think my account has much to do with the particular problems you are experiencing, but I'll just put it out there and you can decide:

I recently had to return my refurbished R-D1 body for rangefinder alignment, and to make a long story short, I was sent a new replacement body after the second time I sent my camera in. This example had a perfectly aligned finder, but to my dismay, upon powering the unit up, I could not get the LCD to turn on despite the needles and picture taking functions still being intact. I had 4 genuine Epson batteries that were fully charged, and each one failed to turn the LCD on despite trying every single button. As a last resort, I tried to reload the firmware (because the Espon technician mentioned the new firmware was loaded in the work order) and when I initiated the first steps (pressing the menu and user buttons simultaneously while turning the power on), the LCD screen turned on and showed me the menu to begin firmware update. Although the firmware update was unsuccessful because of repeated error messages, the fact remained that the LCD was capable of turning on (when previously it appeared "dead"), but only during firmware update and not during regular operation of the camera.

I eventually sent the body back a third time, and again received a new replacement body with upgraded firmware, this time with a functioning LCD but slightly tilted rangefinder patch. Luckily everything functioned as it should so I decided not to pursue the rangefinder alignment issue any further.

Sorry for the long post, but I guess what I am trying to say is that although the body with the seemingly "dead" LCD may have had problems with the firmware upgrade, it was actually able to turn on under certain conditions. Thus, you might be able to check whether your LCD is truly non-functioning by trying the button pushing combination used in the firmware upgrade procedure. If it turns on, then I'm not sure what is going on (just don't proceed with the upgrade--hopefully initiating the upgrade button pressing sequence alone does not harm anything but I don't know for sure); but if it doesn't turn on then you know there is some kind of physical or electrical problem that may require repair.

I too had trouble with a non-working LCD after not using the RD-1 for a period of time. I put a fully charged battery in it for a couple of days and just turned it on every so often. After a couple of days, it mysteriously started working and I have not had any problems with it since. I make sure I always keep a fully charged battery in it now if I'm not going to use it for a while and, like I said, it has been fine.

I had the same issue and after reading this thread did the same thing. Mine also stopped working after letting it sit for some time. I too put in a fresh battery and got the LCD working again. I will continue checking it periodically to make sure that it stays that way.

Some questions for all those who have encountered this mysterious "lcd won't turn on" problem. Did you ever have to do anything more than put in a fully recharged battery and keep trying the camera over a period of several days? And has the problem ever reoccurred? If so, was the solution the same or did you ultimately have to do something else to get the lcd to turn on again? Any additional thoughts, experiences and insights would be helpful.

Thanks,
Randy
