There are some real upgrades.
The one I have used is dead pixel mapping.
Dead pixels are a reality with digital imaging.
Having the camera map them is a real deal upgrade.
Is it an important question ? At the moment, they are only two digital rangefinder available on the market. M or R. Obviously, each owner of one or other concept has is reasons.
Personnaly I choose to buy an used rd1s instead of an M something. Why ? Since I use digital, my only lost picture was with an M8.2 a dealer lend me for a test before purchasing it. So i found an rd1s in japan with 1 year waranty.
I do not have any regrets about it. Even with some troubles using it, understanding the behaviour of the metering and the unacurate framing. Doesn't matter. With this camera, you are between two worlds, the cocking lever reminds you the film era, and elecronics the digital world. Great. A really piece of photographic history.
My hope, that Epson will continue to produce and maybe improve these series
The only enhancement that I'm not sure is firmware-only is the RAW buffer increase from 2 to 3. Was that done by modifying the firmware only, or did they add a physical memory location in the R-D1s?
I have the R-D1 and I upgraded the firmware myself to the "S" level (so i know it was done properly, and all the upgraded features are functioning).
I consider the camera an R-D1S.
In my mind it is a real R-D1S, but if insanity strikes me and for some reason I was to list it to sell it, I'd call it an R-D1 with upgraded R-D1s firmware, not a R-D1S since the body does not have "S" printed on it.
(P.S. - no, I do not care) 🙂
