? re. 50 planar vs. 50 sonnar

Thanks for the replies. I am still going to save up as I now have contracted GAS again and would like something for low light. I wonder, though, if zeiss plans to release an f1? I honestly can't see that the market is substantial enough to support two manufacturers making them for better than $3k so I wonder how complicated they are to make compared to other 50 mm lenses? If zeiss could outsource an f1 to japan to lower the price by 25-50% that would be interesting. If If If 🙂

Take a look at my results on the Canon 50mm/0.95 lens. The images are really different from anything else I have tried so far. Ultra-fast lenses can be the cream of the crop if used appropriately.

FWIW I also prefer the drawing of the Planar. It is an outstanding lens - saying that it is on a par with the Summicron is to say quite a lot and not too much, at the same time. They are both outstanding but in a different way.

The situation between the Planar and the Sonnar reminds me of a similar dilema I had between the Summicron and the Summilux preasph. I preferred the Summicron but the Summilux was faster. I ended up buying both.

If I was interested in the Sonnar the samples that would interest me the most would be the close range ones.
 
Very nice raid! Too bad there isn't a way to mount/couple that to a rangefinder. I do have a manual nikon f-mount so I wonder if the canon could be adapted to that?

I may email zeiss just to see what they say on the f1 issue.

The Canon 7s is a rangefinder camera, and the Canon 50/0.95 is a rangefinder lens. I bet that it is possible to have this lens custom adapted [for lots of money] to other camera systems.

tech Marty Forscher in N.Y. use to do very brisk business in the early 1960s adapting the F.95 to Leica M3s.

Sorry, Vlad. No idea. I wouldn't hold my breath; Zeiss seems ot take a long time getting their photo equipment to market after they've made the announcement.

I'd look at the Cosina website (www.cosina.co.jp) for an announcement. It will probably be posted there even before it's posted by Zeiss. You can use http://babelfish.com for translation.

The ZM range uses some of the classic names, but not all lenses are classic designs, e.g. the 2.8/15 Distagon and the 85mm "Sonnar" with a 6-6 configuration. Both lenses incorporate floating elements which is a completely modern feature.

However, I don't see Zeiss introducing an f/1 or even f/1.2 lens (as in the C/Y anniversary editions) for the ZM either. If nothing else, just look at how long the two most costly models have already been delayed.

I have closed my eyes and purchased an M6 with a super nice 35/2 ASPH in chrome. However, now I need a 50 mm ...(desperately).

I am very much undecided between a Planar and the Sonnar. I would like to see how the Sonnar behaves wide open, stopped down and in B+W, where its softer touch should lead to nicer images.

No Planar & Sonnar comparison, yet??
 
There was an attempt to do comparison, but I guess sonnar owners don`t really want to take pictures, same way as new portra owners 🙂
 
I dont think you will go wrong with either. The OOF comments on both lenses have appeared on threads in this forum. Some like the planar look and some the sonnar. It is perhaps not surprising that nobody can post direct comaprisons as both are relatively new. The planar is a very crisp lens and is perhaps not a 'romantic' lens if that is what you are after. The sonnar wide open may give you less sharpness if that is what you are actualy after. Some seemed to proclaim love at the sight of the sonnar OOF areas and others that they were horrid. The OOF on the planar is very pleasant IMO. Smooth and not at all distracting. This comes from looking at a few rolls of negs on the light box as I am minus a working scanner at present. Cannot speak for the sonnar.

I would like to see if there are any noticeable differences (sharpness, mainly) between these lenses beyond f2. If not, the extra stop of the Sonnar would be very worthwhile IMHO as would be its tinier size...

That, of course if it is really "useable" wide open...
 
They have different painting, I don`t think there will be difference in sharpness even at f/2, also charecter difference might be hard to see in closed down..
 
I have just had a look at the MTF of the Nokton (http://www.imx.nl/photosite/technical/highspeedlenses/t003.html) and Sonnar (http://www.zeiss.com/C12567A8003B8B6F/EmbedTitelIntern/CSonnar_1.5_50_ZM.EN/$File/CSonnar_1.5_50_ZM.EN.pdf) and to me they are quite similar wide open...

One thing that attracts me to the Sonnar is its beautiful (to my eyes, at least) color and texture rendition...It is sharp without being aggresively so ("clinical"?). It almost looks paint-like.
