RE: old screw mount leica elmar 35/3.5 or 50/3.5 info. pls!!!

I am thinking to use old LTM mount elmar 50/3.5 or 35/3.5 lens. Can I use them with m8? I mean I can close lens without damaging shutter of m8? what is clearance from lens mount to shutter? DOes any one use these lenses with m8?

I am buying all other stuff like screen protector and 35/1.2 voightlander lesnse but no m8 as yet...!!!!!!!:angel::angel:

Thank you my friends!!!

Don't use any of the collapsing lenses on the M8 (or if you do be very, very sure you don't collapse them). There are a couple of exceptions but they are all modern lenses: CV 50mm f2 Heliar, and I think, the 90mm Macro Elmar and the last version of the 50mm Elmar.

The older uncoated lenses tend to be collapsible. The 35/3.5 Elmar is rigid mount.

Just do not collapse the lenses on your camera. Some people put a spacer on the barrel to prevent it from going in too far.

The lower contrast uncoated lenses should be a perfect match for an M8. They will prevent clipping on the image, ie blowing highlights and losing shadows.

It's news to me that the f/3.5 Elmar was rigid. Even my Russian copies are collapsible.

There are adapters around to make LTM lenses fit Ms, but I'm not sure I see the point. My one and only Leica is an M4-2. By that time they had M-mount lenses, and all three of mine are that type.

I use a collapsible Elmar / Summitar and Fed [ Elmar / Tessar copy ] on my M 8 - WITH NO PROBLEM AT ALL . I find the 67mm focal length perfect for me too !

I was advised by my London dealer Len of R. G . Lewis that it's a myth that collapsibles wil hit the shutter / sensor , but Leica sure as heck don't recommend [or admit it ? ] 'cos they want to sell new lenses .

In other words , if anything goes wrong , you are on your own .

As for why use old lenses , there's simply something about the picture quality of these vintage optics that I love , but then I love 50s / 60s slides and old 50's films !

[ In fact my M 8 is permanently set up for screw lenses including a new 35mm f 2.5 Voightlander Classic . ]

As for the sensible thought that I should buy one modern Leitz lense so as not to compromise it's performance ...
I have dee'cided that it's MY almost-impossibly-expensive dream camera , and it was either , a complementary Leica DSLR or a Leitz 35mm lense - and the Fed and Voight create fine photos .

I have also adapted an ex-Zenit 39mm I 50 [ Elmar derivative ] by rubbish 39/42 adapter into a perfectly good , Pentax / 4/3rds adapter for my Leica Digilux 3 ... to complement the superb modern zoom ! Now it's firmly stuck , so no Pentax screw lenses !

However , I love the pics from the tiniest 100mm lense ever .

Just take the camera out and enjoy -whatever the lense !

The Elmar 35mm F3.5 is Rigid mount. The Elmar 50 F3.5 was collapsible, in LTM and M-Mount. The 90/4 Elmar was Rigid in LTM, and available in both Rigid and Collapsible in M-Mount. The 135 Elmars are Rigid only.

The 35mm Elmar is soft compared to the Summaron, but stopped down it's good. The Summaron is a post-war, coated lens.

When a lens is collapsible, collapsibility must be limited to the permissible amount by means of a protective tape. The protective tape is available in various widths internationally from Messrs DYMO.

The tape should surround the lens mount leaving a gap of 1mm. To obtain the right length, a paper pattern should first be cut.

ELMAR 50mm f3.5 Required width of tape: 9.5mm
