Really, really bad GAS

A few items I have looked at recently have gone for less than I expected. Maybe the market is cooling a little.

No great concerns about missing this one. As Oscar says, there will be others.

Someone talk me down....

I am thinking about hanging out at work later than normal tomorrow just to try to snipe an ebay auction. This is sick. It will close while I am in the car if I don't stay. Tomorrow is Friday, I rearly stay in work till normal closing time on Fridays, never mind late. It is a really nice lot though 😀 .

Hopefully by 3:00 it will be bid up over my budget and I will be able to go home early.

Why don't you use such a Bid-O-Matic software ? No flat rate ?
Best,
Bertram

I wasn't comfortable giving someone my ebay id and password. It would have worked for this item because someone got a real nice bargain I think. Good for them.

I mispoke. It's a Ricoh GR1s. But still....

And what's so special about it?

Ted,

Other people have commented on this on the original thread. There are also a number of reviews on the net. It really is a nice slim light camera with a tough magnesium body. It also has an aperture priority mode, which offers more control over the typical p&s.

What really makes it special, however, is the quality of the lens. If you read Erwin Puts' test (http://www.imx.nl/photosite/japan/japanese28.html), he found the little Ricoh's lens is better than the 1st and 2nd gen Elmarit M's. It is not as good, but quite comparable to the last and current gen Elmarits. That, in a portable compact package that will do double duty as p&s.

Ray

Thank you, Ray. Interesting read. Wonder what Erwin would have to say about the Super Takumar 28.

But back to the Ricoh, I now understand why it is held in such high regard.

Ted

PS: Just looked on ebuoy. One is at $380, 7 bids and one day to go. I'm impressed.

Someone lock me up and toss the key !!! I was inspired by your post - set my alarm clock to 4.15 AM in the morning (gmt+1) in order to try to snipe an auction for a M3 with a summarit and the original hood (the hood was actually what I was looking for - hrmph) filters bag neverready case books etc.
When I went to bed it was 520 USD when I got up a gentleman from Japan had it at 789 USD - I put in a bid at 900 USD and waited ( with an exstra window open to check time) until 6 sec was left and I pressed the bidconfirm and won the auction at 830 USD.
NOW THAT I AM AWAKE - and happy - UPS did I get carried away - was 830 (that I do not have but that I can mobilize) to much -L ike that scene with Clint Eastwood were he says "Now, to tell you the truth, in all this excitement I kind of lost track myself" PLEASE tell me I did not :bang: here is a link to the auction:

Did anyone actually ever se this person Jorge that started this site - does he have little red horns and a 3-fork with GAS written on it ! Oh dear - I have always stayd away from gambling but this much worse - I will for ever be doomed (at least untill the package clear thru costoms)
your sincerly GAS-SNIPIST

Unless something got lost in translation, Ruben, looks to me like you got one heck of a deal.

As for Jorge, he's a human clone (e.g. humanoid) and lives solely in cyberspace. However - and here's a secret - he buys his coffee (Piñon Coffee) in Albuqurque.

Someday I'll own a Leica again (last one, an M3, was in '85). Sigh.

Ted

I was wrong about Jorge and the coffee. It was Solares Larrave. Tengo una problema con nombres latinos.

Ted

THMK:

Would you mind comparing viewfinder brightness between your M3 and the Bessa R3a?

Thank you,

Ted

Congratulations Ruben. That is one nice camera you will soon have.

Someone here in Australia got a great bargain today (and it was not me). He/she got a Voigtlander Vitomatic for $1 (plus postage). And to think I wasn't going to bid because I thought it would go for more than I was willing to pay.

It definately looks like you got $400 plus of lens and hood so $830 for the kit seems like a good deal. Count on spending $200 or so for a good CLA, and you still made out well.

CLA yep I have asked on another thread about recommended shops for that - one thing though - I would like to know if it is a good idea to send things of to CLA if they work fine! Or should one let the monsters rest until thw wake by them selves and then send it of ???

Ruben, regarding CLA - i would consider two factors: If i know how the camera has to work (like, i have another one) and in comparison to that, the camera in case seems allright, i would not send it out. If i get a totally new for me camera however, it might seem to me that it works okay but maybe it's not, and it's on its way to break. Then i'd send it out or consult somebody experienced who can check it, at least.

Second, if all seems to work ok, and i am not sure about the person who would do the CLA, i would not send it out. He might do more harm than heal.

Example: the famous Yashica clunk. If you don't know about the 'clunk' sound during winding, and it's not there, you might still think all is okay w your camera but you will get exposures all over the place since the pad is gone.
Or, the Kiev i've got. The slow speeds were acting a bit strange but still working with approx correct timing. I had no experience so i thought it's okay like that. But eventually after tens of shutter releases, the shutter ribbon broke. And that's the end of a long process, thus that was probably the reason for the weird slow speed behaviour, but i had no idea about it until it stopped to work.

@tedwhite:
I tested under the light of normal incandescent lamps:
Due to the colder color of the finder the M3 seems to be a bit brighter than the R3A but aiming at pointed light sources the corona is more present on the M3. This effect is better suppressed on the R3A. The RF patch on the R3A is slightly brighter and not as yellow (or is it gold?) as on the M3.
My M3 was recently CLA'd by Leica so it is possible that other M3 finders are not as bright as mine.

Cheers
Thomas-Michael
