...I've looked for info on getting my Leica CLA'd but just can't find much.

Any ideas of rough price and best place for a UK based leica user to get a CLA. Everything seems pretty good but at the 1 and 1/2 sec shutter speeds my M6 makes an odd whirring sound after the shutter has clicked. Also the white meter spot looks a wee bit speckled - though I tend to use a hand held meter.

Oh go on then, while I'm here. Second body time. I know it'll be a meterless body, I tend to shoot wider rather than longer but which M? What's the deal with the M3/2 and the film loading spool, does the takeup reel actually separate from the baseplate? Is this slow? I'm not looking to buy just yet but I want to know everything about the camera from everyday users before I splash the cash.

CLA info would be most gratefully received!!

Thanks

the whirring sound i;ve learned is normal for the m2. I would expect the same forthe m6.
The m2 is a joy to use, i must say. Not the collapsible summicron though, with an impossible-to-grip thin focus grip and a rather awkward tab on it.

May I ask what kind of sound it is? Something different than the "zzzzz" which one can hear while the shutter is running and even a few moments after it has closed again at these slow speeds?

What Manny et. al. have already said. CRR and the M2 are the way to go. The takeup spool of the M2 is actually more secure in loading than the M6; and perhaps only a couple of seconds more time consuming.

dont worry, the m6 I used had the same sound, its the mechanical timing mechanism.

btw there is a decent looking user m2 in the classifieds right now, I have my eye on it but dont know if I can justify that yet since I just got a bessa

Hi Simon,
Malcolm Taylor calibrated the rangefinder of my M6 last year - good job. I have the whirring sound on slower speeds but I have also noticed a strange "bouncing", clattering sound after the main shutter click which is hard to describe but doesn't sound right. Hence, I'm also planning to get the M6 fully serviced soon. MT is "reassuringly expensive" but I'm also looking into angelfire.

Like you, I'm thinking of a second body; something with a bit of automation: Bessa or Zeiss Ikon maybe?

All the best.

Thanks everyone. The whirring I'm getting sounds exactly like various people have described so I won't worry too much. All my exposures seem to be correct at various speeds but I was just worried something may be on its way out. I think I'll hold off a CLA as the chap I bought from said it had a CLA last year and he seemed a very upfront and honest guy. I'll keep a note of the suggestions though as I think i'll give it a full service once I've had it for a year.

As regards the second body - I won't be buying anything yet, i need to save some money for the purpose but it may very well be the M2. I've heard very good things and the wider framelines will be a must for me. I was a little concerned about the fiddly nature of the take up spool but then I'd heard Leicas generally were hard to load and I've found mine to be an absolute joy since I've had it!

If it had a CLA last year then it shouldn't need a service as effectively a CLA is a service. Should be good for many years to come if it was done well.
