Rebranded Agfa report ...

Bill, that's a very fine shot. I like the colors. I'm sure some will be surprised to see how sharp it is when they realize you shot at 1/30th.

I agree that the film lies quite flat which makes scanning much easier.

Our own Captain Caveman, taken at a coffeeshop last weekend. Walgreens "Studio 35" ISO 200 - also known as Agfa 200...possibly Vista. Camera was a classic Ricoh 519M rangefinder, 45mm f1.9. Shot wide open, available light, 1/30. Scanned with KM SD IV under Vuescan/Linux, slight color correction in The Gimp/Linux. Resized and USM applied for posting here.

I like this film. For a buck, I'm thrilled. Lays flat for scanning, too.

"Somewhere in middle America" looks like Chicago, DMR.

Well, the photos are Chicago, but the "Somewhere In Middle America" line refers to my approximate home location. Counting Crows fans will recognize it immediately. 🙂 🙂

Good color! Which camera did you use?

Thanks. 🙂

These were not done with {blush} a rangefinder. Olympus Stylus P&S. I was giving the rebranded Agfa a work-out in it.

I had Kodachrome 64 in the GIII that weekend, and those were just sent off to Dwayne's yesterday.

Sorry D,

I never did figure out the lyrics to "Mr. Jones and Me" so I didn't get their CD 🙁

I will paint my picture
Paint myself in blue and red and black and gray
All of the beautiful colors are very very meaningful
Greg is my favorite color
I felt so symbolic yesterday
If I knew Picasso
I would buy myself a gray guitar and play

Mr. Jones and me look into the future
Stare at the beautiful women
"She's looking at you.
Uh, I don't think so. She's looking at me."
Standing in the spotlight
I bought myself a gray guitar
When everybody loves me, I will never be lonely

I want to be a lion
Everybody wants to pass as cats
We all want to be big big stars, but we got different reasons for that Believe in me because I don't believe in anything
and I want to be someone to believe

You know there are a lot of cat avatars on this forum. I wonder if they're all CC fans. 🙂

Thanks! I bought out my town - something close to 40 rolls. I don't think it is going to be restocked by Walgreens, so I'm watching for sales on their remaining Studio 35 in other speeds/packaging.

And I found one online for the 400 ISO Studio 35:

Walgreens Studio 35 4-Pack 24 Exposure ISO 400 - $4.99 (.05 per exposure) I guess if you order $50 worth, you get free shipping too.

Kodak Gold 200 24-exposure is a buck more per 4-pack. Still not horrible as prices go - that's 6 cents per frame.

However, they've taken the $1 Studio 35 200 off their website - don't know if that means it is out of their retail stores as well - I was told it was to go until the end of the month - that's Monday, not today....sigh. Anyway, I've got plenty of the stuff, but I like to share deals I find with my RFF friends.

Best Regards,

Bill Mattocks

The only big difference between Walmart/Polaroid/Agfa and Walgreen/Agfa is that I have never seen W/P/A in 36 exposure and 12 exposure rolls and ISO 100 is hard to find. W/A is available in 36 and 12 exposure rolls as well as ISO 100.

I see the Polaroid stuff in 12 exposure all the time at my local Walmart, usually marked at 77 cents per roll. Never noted the ISO, I have no use for 12 exposure rolls. But I do believe it is all the same stuff if the ISO and exposures match between Walgreens' Studio 35 and Walmart's Polaroid.

Get your agfa film while you can folks - they will not be making any more. Agfa Photo has been in protective bankruptcy since May and a resue deal with UK company Photome has recently failed. All manufacturing has ceased and the receivers are selling off existing stock. All operations will ceasy by the end of the year. 114 years of history gone. Thanks digital! No more Neutol WA, nor more great paper, no more Viradon, no more 100 APX, no more FX Universal (I'll miss that). We live in dark days.

Yes, we've been aware of Agfa's impending doom for awhile now. No criticism intended, but it has been a major topic of discussion here recently.

It is a sad day when a company with the legacy and history of Agfa closes, and I feel very sorry for the workers laid off.

And yes, this is due to the market shift to digital cameras.

However, I prefer not to think that we live in "dark days." Rather, we live in changing times. Change is always difficult, and sometimes the results are not as rosy as first painted, but change is the nature of things.

In some ways, we can be thankful that the digital revolution took as long as it did to invade our turf. Music fans can tell horror stories.

Consider also that many of the best things belonging to Agfa Photo other than film and paper are the formulas and trademarks - there is no need for there not to be a Rodinal, for example. Just made by some other company. It happens.

Bill Mattocks

When consumers bought more auto focus point and shoot cameras than any other 35mm camera and when these cameras started appearing on store shelves in blister packs, I knew big changes were coming. That was 20 years ago.

Someone will probably come out with custom film that's optimized for specific lens coatings. Zeiss film? Nikon film? Leica film? Canon film? 😎

I just bought 20 rolls of 24 exposure Agfa 400 from my local Walgreens at $1.25 per roll. The 200 speed film was not on sale so I passed on it for the moment. Maybe it'll be on sale next week. There's another Walgreens about 15 miles up the Interstate that I can check.

I just checked the Walgreen's where I bought 6 rolls of 24 exposure 200 ASA film for $6 several weeks ago. The new sale price is $2.49 per roll. :bang:

Here's a 4 pack of 400 ASA for $4.99

If you're lusting after 200 instead of 400, this here ^ is a pretty good deal, methinks. I like Kodak Gold 200 - wish I could still find the 100 locally. I don't like it enough to mail order it, but I'd buy it at retail.

This exists already, Calbe R09, and Fomadon R09. I am using Fomadon at the moment, works just fine! If you want I can give you website to buy it!

Thanks, Bill. I like the search feature on Walgreen's website. All I have to do is type in "film" and it lists all the deals on film.

I can buy through a friend, who works at an electronics superstore, for 5% above cost. I'll check it out this weekend.

R.J.

Well, the superstore gets a 5 pack of 24 exp Kodak Gold ASA 200 for $8.22, marks it up 33.6% to $10.99. Wholesale is $1.64 per roll which seems high for film made in China.
