I just had a photo published in the March/April2014 issue of Audubon Magazine. The image is from the 2012 Pine Creek fire that took place in the Paradise Valley area of south central Montana. The sheer power of that raging inferno was something to behold.

congratulations on the publication, Matt, though the occasion is awful. I'd love to see a bio-pic in the magazine that shows you with the X-Pro (in that world where DLSRs rule the pages).

Congrats.

Hope you received compensation equal to or better than your excellent photograph.

Yes, the compensation was quite agreeable. My only quibble was that the photo credit was rather minuscule. I had to look for a bit before I found it hidden in the gutter (it was a 2-page spread). Oh well -- I was still pretty excited.🙂

Thank you all for your kind words.

As terrible as this fire was, fortunately there were no injuries, which could have been a very real possibility considering the circumstances. The fire started in the foothills and quickly raced up a drainage to the top of a 9000+ ft. mountain, where it then proceeded along the ridgetops and burned back down the mountains. A change in the winds moved the flames back up the mountains where they were somewhat contained by the rocky, high alpine basins, where they continued to smolder for the next couple of months until the area received its first significant snowfall in October.

As terrible as forest fires can be, it is still quite mesmerizing to the observer. Here's a pic from another vantage point:
