recommend a good developed for tmax film

i had a bad time today with tmax 100 developed with acufine at 200...
it had muddy contrast and wasn't sharp at all..

reason why i used acufine was because i had a good experience with it developing tmax 400 at 400 and thought it might work ok with tmax 100..

but after reading some online suggestions, i have no idea what to use anymore..

i have d76, hc110, rodinal, acufine in hand..
anyone have any suggestions?

i'm just looking for sharp, fine grain, full speed, medium contrast developing with the possiblity of pushing 1 stop...

first off...why push a 100 speed film? that doesn't really make sense. If you're shooting 100 speed, why the desire to push?

I would recommend Rodinal at 1+50. The film would benefit from the acutance.

Also remember that TMX is so fine that it looks unsharp when it actually is at full resolution. The grain is so fine and contrary to what one is accustomed with traditional emulsions that it has a lack of apparent sharpness even when it is, in fact, sharp.

it was a formula i followed online, which did not give me a time for 100 speed. it claimed to be the manufacture developing times..

before i try your rodinal suggestion, i tried rodinal 1+50 with delta 400 (similar to tmx i presume) and the results were also muddy..attached pic..

Well, I have not tried Rodinal with Delta 400, but it does work very well with TMX. The Delta 400 shots just look like you need to work on exposure and development. My personal opinion has been that you can get just about whatever result you want out of any film and developer combination, with the excpetion of slight increases and decreases in grain and speed.

EI100 & D-76 stock, 7 minutes, 20C, is the only thing I've ever gotten good results from when using Tmax.

yeah the exposure was bad on that pic..

i'll do another test tomorrow and see if i get better results..

ive only developed one roll with tmax dev and i am pretty pleased with the results. it was hp5 shot at 400, developed 1:4 for 6:30 @ somewhere between 68-75 probably. i didnt have a thermometer and just got the water to a temp that i thought was right.

You got the water to a temp you thought was right? Man, this place is SO not APUG 🙂.

Tmax RS dev was originally developed for the Tmax line of films, but some argue that it loses on a lot of points compared to newer and older devs. Speed enhancing, but not by much. A little grain-increasing, but sharpness isn't as high, relatively-speaking.

XTOL remains the most "modern" commercial dev around, though FX-50 is also an ascorbic-phenidone developer but it's hard to get here in the US.

Anyway. I like Rodinal or FX-39 with it. It just makes sense to go with acutance with a film this fine-grained. I have 2 boxes of FX-50 that I need to try with some TMX...

I don't use a lot of TMax but have had good results in both D76 and HC110. I have liked the results I have gotten with it better when processed with DDX though.

I'll throw about anything in Rodinal once. I like TMAX 100 AND 400 in Rodinal 1+50. Rate at box speed.

Please advise your method of processing as this may be the problem.
T-Max is best in D-76 and Rodinal. With Agfa now gone it leaves only D-76. The T-Max liquid concentrate dev is a derivative of D-76 anyway so why pay the money? Ilford's ID-11 should do the trick. Sometimes stated as being the same as D-76 it is in fcat not, but delivers the same quality images at approx. the same processing time/temp. combinations.

AGFA CHEMICALS ARE NOT GONE!

The company A&O bought the rights to manufacture the chemicals. We'll see the new batches on the shelves before too long. And, IIRC, it is NOT the R09 that J&C sells, but the same formula that Agfa sold in the last few years.
