Recommend image hosting site.

I am looking for a quality image host. After having my images massacred & turned to mush by Flickr & Photobucket, it's time for me to find a better site. I'm strictly an amateur/hobbyist. So far, SmugMug looks good. I would appreciate any first hand input.

There are plenty of free options out there. My suggestion if you want total control is just get your own domain, about $15 a year, and your own hosting, about $30 a year and just use a free wordpress template and make your own website. It's super simple.
 
I researched this a few weeks ago and - for me - decided on ipernity. It's free of charge, there are no limits on uploads, and the user interface is very good both for the uploader as well as for the reader.
It's not very good for soliciting comments and constructive criticism - that is why I keep posting here.

There is also indexhibit.org, which need your own domain and could be well designed.
But, it needs a lot of researche in css if you want to make it very personal.

The advantage is, by the time the design is fixed, it s a powerful way to publish.

Thid is true, indeed, Blogger is a very good way to do it. You can personalise it very quickly and the system is always working.

I have tried both of them. With indexhibit, you store on your personal website.

With blogger, i am not sure but i think it s the same as g+, there is limit for the weight of the picture. If you do not overpass the limit, you have unlimited storage.
Can't remember the limite, but it's large enough. Exept if you want to store theme in HD.

I think it s more than 3 months that i started with indexhibit, as you can see it's take time ! Barikapix.org and barikapix.blogspot.com

Tumblr seeems also easy to use but i don't know how it works.

Tumblr and blogger are fully compatible on most of the mobile like phone and tablet. Depends on what you want to do.

What's wrong with Flickr, if you are "strictly an amateur/hobbyist" -- which I assume means you're not trying to sell prints?
 
I have been using Clikpic for my "Focus On Newfoundland" website (see link in my signature) for the past few years, and am extremely pleased with it. I pay $10 annually for my domain name, through Google Apps, and the Clickpic hosting is just $87 per year. ($7.25 per month) The "Professional" package, which allows for 1,000 images, is $134 per year. ($11.17 per month) The templates are very simple to customize, and the customer support is outstanding. Clikpic offers a two week free trial. Definitely worth checking out, if you require a professional yet inexpensive website.

I agree.

I think your stuff gets lost among the trillions of other images posted in places like flikr, etc etc. But, I could be wrong about that (it's only my opinion).

Get your own domain name and web hosting service and post your pictures, tell your friends, add it to your photo-forum signatures, leave you card on poster boards and coffee houses.

If you have any html skills, writing a simple web page for pictures is painfully easy, and you might think about doing that yourself.
 
I opted for Smugmug several years ago and have been pleased. An overkill for my needs but initially had concerns with opting for a service that had a chance of surviving. I didn't want to worry about what happened to my photos if they shut down. Charging a fee created a revenue stream which meant they were in business, not just getting together as an act of passion. It's a site dedicated to our hobby but mostly looking to attract professionals.

Smugmug support is very helpful when you need it. Some minor negatives, I wish blogging was a generic feature, I often wish Smugmug had a different name.

All said, I'd give blogger.com a look. I think Google may own it?

My problem with Flickr and Photobucket is that the images are so degraded that I hesitate to show them. Yes, I am an amateur/hobbyist and I don't sell my images. I still take some pride in them and don't want to display "mush". Hence, my search for a site that has higher quality hosting. I hope that makes some sense.
