Recommendations for Europe trip

Wow so much AWESOME advice -

Yeah I'm definetly not keen on just packing a film p&s, I've already got the girlfriends minolta digital. I'm a professional photographer in advertising so I do notice image quality and Im not a fan of old school ps autofocus.

I really prefer prime lenses - I find I work better when I have to use my legs as an effective focal length hehe... SLRs are too clunky... Hence rangefinders are best for me. I like around a 35-50 focal length.

Yeah I still haven't tried that c41 B&w film, but I think I will just be taking colour.

So far, Im leaning toward a 2nd hand Bessa R with russian LTM lense - I61ld and one of the jupiters for lower light compensation plus an xa and the digital PS for snapshots.

The other thing I have looked at, is a Contax G1, which is more automated than an old rangefinder, but from reports it seems to be a very good camera with very sharp lenses. Anyone know anything about it? I may be able to get one for quite a good price.

Thank you all so much for the advice - Please also feel free to discuss anything related to the topic, it's all good information.

Oh, and Im also still leaning toward the GTN/GSN or a minolta 7s for the main camera - I have a lot of experience with both these cameras and personally, I love them both - super sharp, great contrasty lens and both really solid. Fairly inexpensive too. I thinkit mainly depends what I can get a Bessa R or contax G1 or hexar AF for. (the hexar AF is the other one Im looking at - Anyone know anything)

Thanks again
Gavin

I've taken my olympus XA on a few trips and I think it's a must have, even if it's as a 2nd camera. When I travel I try to go as light as possible because you never know how long you'll be walking around with your backpack. The XA is a great camera with a great lens, and it fits in the front pocket of your jeans. Plus, because it's aperture priority, it's a great camera to take out at night. I've gotten some nice shots just setting it on a table top and letting it take a 1-3 second exposure. And since you can get one for less than $50 on ebay there's really no reason not to take one as a backup.

On my next trip, though, I'll be taking my new leica cl as my main camera. I've only had it for a week, but it seems like a great travel camera if you want to be able to change lenses and go fully manual. I can't wait to take it to southeast asia. 🙂

Also, I bought an olympus RC for my sister a while ago and would recommend that as well. It's one of the smallest fixed lens rangefinders, can be used in full manual mode (although without the meter 🙁 ), and has a really impressive lens. When I shot a roll through it I was blown away with how sharp and nicely contrasty the photos were. I was able to pick one up for $70.

Hope that helps.

Most important advice: make sure they (the French at least) know you're Aussies and not poms 😀

Probably the best single camera, if you can afford it, would be a Fuji 645ZI - small, light-ish and with a wonderful lens with a three-stage zoom. Grab some 220 film and you have a decent number of shots per roll.

I think a decent 35mm compact and a 6x6 folder are a great combination. You can easily carry both around all day long. This was my standard travel kit, and my wife would carry a small digital camera or video.

My favourite combo was the Minox 35GT and Iskra. The 35GT is great for night shots, and both can be handheld to quite low speeds. Both have very good lenses too.
