Hi everyone I don't usually post much but for a rookie when it comes to rangefinder cameras the knowledge that is exhibited in this forum is tremendous. Thanks for sharing! I recently acquired a Leica IIIf RD and I need some input on a couple of things. This camera needs a CLA...any opinions on who still works on these cameras? What 50mm lens is recommended? I am looking for decent performer that really won't break the bank. Is it possible to find something decent in the 75.00 -> 125.00 range? Any input or recommendations would be appreciated greatly. Thanks Mark

here's a link forcamera repairs

the top two people are very popular.. I (and many others here) have had work done by Don (DAG).. he's top-notch and very timely.. Sherry Krauter is very highly regarded, as well

as for a lens.. the first one I'd recommend is a FSU Jupiter-8.. modeled after a Sonnar, it's a stellar lens for the price.. usually around $50.. there's a lot of info in RFF about them

i don't think sherry k works on ltm cameras.

Joe, she might. I'd ask just to be certain.

As for a suitable lens, I think I'd look for a decent 50mm f/3.5 Elmar.

Sherry Krauter doesn't work on LTm Leicas, no question about this.

In addition to DAG who has already been mentioned, John Maddox has an excellent reputation for LTM camera repairs. Essex Camera Service in New Jersey also can handle just about any work on a Barnack Leica.

I propose a different solution. I had a Leica IIIc cla's by Oleg in Russia for about $50 plus shipping both ways, about $40. He did a great job and the camera is spotless. I suggest a Jupiter 8 too.

The latest issue of the Leica Catalog (Nov2005) has Golden Touch (Sherry Krauter) listed as working on all types of Leicas. This is the "sales" publication of the LHSA. It also lists several other US sources, as well as UK, Germany, Malaysia and Canada.

I contacted Sherry some time ago about a CLA on a IIIf. She made it very clear she doesn't work on them.

I emailed Essex about a CLA for my IIc. They said it would cost about $130.
That seems like a good price and from what I've read on this site, they do good work.
I'll probably send it next month.
