Zone VI Workshop -- Fred Picker (can be found used)

Ansel Adams series e.g. Camera, Lens, Negative (Not the 1st unedited edition but the newer, revised editions)

Way Beyond Monachrome, 2nd Edition; Ralph W. Lambrect & Chris Woodhouse

In the long term, all of these books will serve you well. From a money saving perspective, start with Fred Picker and Ansel's books.

The Way Beyond Monochrome is expensive but if you plan on sticking with it, it will become indispensable. Consider it an investment in your future.

Apparently I am alone in finding Adams a wordy and tedious writer, much given to jargon. I'd not recommend any of his books as either entertaining or informative for the beginner

I'm also in the camp that finds Adams wordy and tedious and, for me, not very helpful when I started out.

Adam's First editions are indeed wordy and tedious, that is why I suggest the later, revised updated edition's that are offered in soft copy.

Any book for a newbie at this stage no matter how you slice it is gonna be tedious on first read.

Horenstein will get you there, but Picker's Zone VI Workshop is a better book.

Fred Picker was one of Ansel's assistants.

Picker takes Ansel's ideas and techniques and refines them for the rest of us.
