Recommended hood for Canon 50/1.2 ?

Having just recently bought the Canon 50/1.2 LTM from this very forum, I would now like to know what is a convenient hood for it? I guess about any 55mm screw-in hood would work. How about this one from Heavystar?

I use a 57mm clamp on Yashica 35 hood from the 1960's it fits perfect, doesn't vignette and looks just like the Canon f0.95 hood ~ costs under $20 mostly all the time on Evilbay....

There's one I think, ask them if this is 57mm opening?

I'm pretty sure the Heavystar hood will vignette. ferider is an expert on these matters, let's see if he will chime in 🙂

🙂

On film almost anything will vignette with the 50/1.2, even the wrong filter. Use thin filters (Hoya, original Canon, etc.), and push on hood, for example the hood made for the OM Zuiko 55/1.2 worked well for me.

The vignetting is visible at f5.6 and higher, at long focus distances. If you use the lens only wide open, or on a crop sensor, none of the above matters, generic screw in hood and normal filter should be OK.

I am using the lens on film (Leica M6 and IIIf, though the latter case is madness) and I bought it for shooting at f1.2 - I have plenty of smaller sharper lenses to use in situations when I don't need the extreme speed, so this dictates the hood selection to..... ?

I use the Yashica hood on film and digital M and it doesn't vignette.....perfect hood for the f1.2/50 ~ I love that lens, really great for shooting Black and White with 😀

Here's a shot of my assistant using my M6 with the hood attached to the lens.....

I have the Yashica hood for my 50/1.2, but mine came in a nifty bluish gray (couldn't tell from the eBay pic).

I also have a 57mm Petri hood in the classifieds that works and looks great also.

I have one like the OP linked to (from Heavystar) excepting I bought the 62mm version and a 55-62 step-up ring, hoping the larger diameter wouldn't vignette. It's 69mm across at the front. Guess what - it still vignettes at small apertures. 🙁

I'll have to hunt for the Yashica hood - thanks for the tips.

Here's Mine.

Here's Mine.

I have found that the lens will vignette with a standard 55mm filter, but the Slimline 55mm Canon Filters do -not- vignette at all. That's why they made them, I guess? Mine also has the LeicaGoodies STEER, which I find helps with the handling of this big lens. And a plastic Schneider large format Lenscap fits the original Canon Hood very tightly, without problems.

I lucked out and found an original Hood for $105, which I think is a good price for this item. BTW one just sold in the Classifieds here for $65.

Thanks for all the suggestions so far. One more thing, I guess heavystar's 55mm hood version that is meant for wide angles would probably not vignette (?) but, would it block any noticeable amount of stray light either?

It might be too late but I asked for a Electro 35 hood to use for 1.2 then the used camera dealer gave me a Canonet hood instead.
It fits fine.

Keith that is a beautiful shot of the lens hood on the 50f1.2. The openings on the hood allow some viewing through the hood as a 50f1.4 hood I just received does not have any but with my M3 being higher it doesn't hardly show the hood. But if I use my Canon 501.4 with hood it shows too much on the small Barnack Leicas.

I lucked out and found an original hood on eBay for a BIN of $55. Could not believe it. I've been looking for some time to find one that is reasonably priced. Should be here tomorrow or Tuesday. 🙂
