Recycling used chemistry

Hey

I have a used up c-41 kit that I want to recycle so that I can use the bottles for a new mix.

Perhaps a stupid question, but can I just pour developer, blix and stab into a bigger container and drive that to the recycling station? Or does it usually have to be handled each by itself?

Perhaps that is a hard question ad maybe it differs between cities and countries? If it helps I am in Sweden. 🙂

No you should keep it seperate. Developer and Blix. The stabilizer you can dump.
Here in the Netherlands you can put it in a KCA small container and give it to a special place for free recycling.
About B&W: depending on the type developer you can dump or recycle it. Stop and wetting agent you can dump. Fixer and selenium toner you have to recycle too.

After a lot of searching on the recycling company website i did find info saying liquids shouldn't be mixed.

However, regarding the stabilizer, I thought I read somewhere that it contains formaldehyde? Isn't that carcinogenic (is that the word?), sounds strange to dump that down the sink?

In any case, if I am recycling two bottles I can just as well recycle three.

What I do find curious though is that of all the people developing their own film, only 1 has an answer to my question.. Go environmentalists! 🙂

I work parttime for a photo services company. We use various processing chemicals which we have been told by the city waste water service is in fact safe to dump down the drain. There are however some chemicals which we do not use that should be disposed of through a recycling service.

I have disposed of my own processing chemicals by dumping them down the drain. In fact I lived several years in a area where we had septic tanks and this never caused issues with it..

Yesterday I almost freaked out over the health hazard when reading about C-41 chemicals and considered stopping with home development completely. 🙂

But I don't know, people have been doing it for ages and doesn't seem like everyone is dying from it so I guess the odd roll here and there doesn't matter much in any case. Especially when living in a city and breathing car fumes every day anyway, hehe.

Old type stabilizer is containing Formadehyde (0,5%-1%).

About the B&W developers: Type Pyro (containing Pyrogallol and/or Pyrocatechine) and para-Phenylene Diamine type you can better collect to.

Just follow common sense. Do not exaggerate all things. You do not want to know what kind of pollution digital crap is causing in environmental things and what crappy chemicals they are using to make any chip.

Another big plus for using Rodinal 1:100 stand dev. Concentrations are so minimal, pouring it down the drain cannot be harmful.

I'm pretty confident that in my 65000+ town, no more than a 100 people still home-develop. Usually, I see about 10 film camera's a year (not counting my own or it would be 15) and none of those guys who live in my town I know still home-develop.

If it weren't for you lot here, I'd be pretty lonely, in fact... 😱
