Red filters on flash

Sounds totally stupid, because no one has ever complained about a flash being too strong and visible.

But, has anyone tried using Red (B&W contrast filters) with flashlights to be able to shoot extremely close and make the flash not-so-visible? Red, not infra-red. Infrared would fit my criterias, but, IR rendering on human subjects is undesirable and hard to control.

If anyone tried it before.... do you have a method to attach the filter to the flash head non-permanently? Using a Leica SF 20.

50 year ago, red flash covers were said to be available. I think that they went the way of the flashbulb.
