Until recently I didn't even know something like a Red Flag 20 existed. Even pictures were hard to come by. But today I was idly looking at the auction site, and I found not one but FOUR Red Flags for sale. WTF?

They are all from Germany... how did they ever get their hands on them? Are they real?

If this has been discussed before, mea culpa, I didn't know. But I bet it is a nice story.

Weren't those the M4 knockoffs that Madame Mao commissioned? As I recall, the guy who did "Red Color News Soldier" wrote that Chinese journos learned to take a Red Flag to cover a Red Guard demo, because if the Red Guards flipped out and attacked the journos, they wouldn't have their (much more valuable) Leicas and Rolleiflexes smashed in the melee.

We've had a long and excellent thread about them by Comrade Zhang over in the FSU forum, with a lot of Red Flag discussion at first, that gradually turned towards Chinese photographic equipment in general. Well worth a read!

Everything I know about the Red Flag comes from that thread 😉

As for the value... how long will it take before some intrepid soul starts converting M4's to Red Flags? A bit like turning a Leica into a Zorki 😀

Intruiging camera nonetheless, pity not more were made.
