Red Letter "P" in Cyrillic on Lens' Fronts

Hi,

Well the title says it all. I've noticed the red letter "P" in Cyrillic on the lenses' fronts of some of my USSR made lens and wonder what it's there for. I just wish I could find a Cyrillic font instead of saying it looks like the two sides and top of a square...

I think that mark was used to indicate coated lenses. And was discontinued once all the various lenses were coated so the distinction was no longer needed.

Yes that's my understanding too - coated.

Correct. It's the abbreviation for "Просветленный" /prosvetLYONnyi/, "coated".

That explains why I couldn't see a pattern to why it was displayed as it just seemed to be used at random.

Now, has anyone any ideas as to how I can type in Cyrillic? It would be usefull to have from time to time when dealing with my ex CCCP cameras etc.

I've XP and Vista in these things and guess it's hidden away somewhere.

Thanks; I think the keyboard I'm using locks me into UK English (as we call it nowadays) but I have been able to pick out the characters from the character map and manage something.

From now on I shall only ask questions about the FED, which will make life easier.

On XP you can install Russian as an input language (as per Armoured's instructions) which will automatically give you a Russian keyboard. The layout is the Russian typewriter one, though, so you have to be somewhat familiar with it before you can type something - it's a good layout, but is not phonetically equivalent to Western key assignments.

You can also Google "Russian keyboard emulator". I've used it a few times, serves me well.

It seems to be a problem with the word processor or text editor more than anything else. Alas I've no say in what I use, ie I use XP and Vista and they are picky.

If it was up to me I'd still be using Word 97 but let's not go into that...
