Redressing a dent on a brass top

Hi all

I plan to repaint my M2 as soon as I complete my clamp set.

Now, the top plate has a light depression from a hit on the meter (The meter is kaputt thanks for asking😀)

It's no big deal but I wander if there is a SAFE way to redress it, Yannaw, just to make it perfect before painting?

I thought maybe to place the top plate on a marble, fit a large piece of wood inside and use a hammer...Idiotic? or not??

I suspect you would have better luck sending it to someone who has experiance in this. If you are brave and not too worried about the results, have at it. Joe

If your going to paint it then a product like Bondo works well.

Unless you have experience as a body man, hammer blows can be hard to control. I prefer to use some plastic blocks and a vice. Use the plastic blocks for actual contact with your top plate and then squeeze the blocks with the vice jaws. It is a good idea to have a radius on the edges of the plastic blocks to prevent anything like a crease where you squeeze the top plate. This method obviously necessitates a small vice. My camera repair vice has 3.5 inch jaws. I haven't achieved perfect results like this, but have had big improvements. If the results aren't satisfactory, then you could try Bondo or even solder to fill the remaining imperfections.

I agree itf. I worked for a goldsmith friend and he had something similar.
